A method and apparatus for baling loose materials, such as waste material, includes a controllably moveable door assembly. In one embodiment, the door is adapted to open from an initial position to a final position such that the compacted bale can be ejected from the compaction chamber through the opening defined by the open door. In this embodiment, the leading edge portion of the door is moved to a final position in general alignment with the compacting ram platen such that bales of various sizes, including oversized bales, can be readily ejected from the baling apparatus. For example, the leading edge portion of the door can be moved into alignment with or rearward of the compacting ram platen. In another embodiment, the baling apparatus operates in a plug bale mode and includes a door which is urged against an at least partially ejected bale so as to securely hold the plug bale within the opening defined to the compaction chamber during the compaction of a succeeding bale. In particular, the door is partially closed until the speed with which the door is being closed is less than a predetermined speed. Once the speed with which the door is being closed falls below the predetermined speed, further closure of the door is halted and the plug bale is securely held within the opening due to the increased frictional forces provided by the partially closed door.

An apparatus for compressing bulky materials, like microfibers having a bulk density of less than about 0.2 PCF, to a much higher density, e.g. about 10.8 PCF, and packaging the compressed mass without damaging the material. The apparatus comprises a hopper having a pivoting wall wherein one edge of the pivoting wall is tapered and cooperates with a curved extension of one wall of an adjoining compression chamber to prevent the material from being pinched or scarffed which would damage the material. The compression chamber is long enough that when the compression means is withdrawn to accept another charge (each package requires a plurality of charging and compressing cycles) the compressed material cannot expand into the opening the compression chamber leading to the hopper. Finally, one end portion of a wall of the compression chamber has a movable retaining wall that also forms a portion of a wall of an adjoining packaging chamber. The hidden hinges and mover for the retaining wall is such that it allows the retaining wall to fit the openings in the walls of the compression and packaging chambers so tightly that the gaps between the retaining wall and the openings do not exceed about 0.067 inches.

A bale discharge apparatus for use in guiding each of a plurality of bales of crop material between a bale forming chamber of a baler and the ground includes a bale turning assembly for turning each bale onto one of the lateral sides as the bale is delivered from the bale forming chamber. A table is provided for receiving each turned bale after the bale has been turned onto one of the lateral sides by the bale turning assembly, and the table is supported beneath the bale turning assembly at a height adapted to position the turned bale at least partially within the path of the next delivered bale so that the front end of the next delivered bale engages the rear end of the turned bale and pushes the turned bale from the table onto the ground. A method of guiding each of a plurality of bales of material between the bale forming chamber and the ground as each of the bales is delivered from the bale forming chamber is also disclosed.
