A workholding apparatus includes a body, and a workholding sleeve composed of metal and carried by the body. A fluid chamber receives a fluid between the body and the workholding sleeve. Under fluid pressure, the sleeve is radially displaceable and recoverable to a high degree. For example, when displaced under fluid pressure, the sleeve experiences substantially complete and repeatable strain recovery of at least about 2% of its overall cross-sectional area. Preferably, the sleeve is composed of Nitinol.

The present invention relates to a method for removing chips on a cutting machine. The method includes: a first step in which an air supplied from an air supply source is introduced to a first opening and is ejected from the first opening, so that an airflow having a predetermined chip blowing force is blown onto a first region among surfaces of respective parts of the cutting machine and respective parts of a work; and a second step in which a moving member having a communication path extending from an air inlet port to a second opening is moved to a position at which the air inlet port is communicated with the first opening, so that the air is ejected from the second opening and thus an airflow having a predetermined chip blowing force is blown onto a second region among the surfaces of the respective parts of the cutting machine and the respective parts of the work.

A method for manufacturing a bevel gear member, comprises the steps of providing a bevel gear blank having a gearhead, forming gear teeth on the gearhead of the bevel gear blank by simultaneously cutting gear tooth top land, gear tooth side profile and a bottom land to form an unfinished bevel gear member using a face hobbing process, and machining at least one selected surface of the unfinished bevel gear member using the top lands of said gear teeth as a datum for centering the unfinished bevel gear member, thus forming a finished product. The method is applicable for manufacturing the bevel gear member both with shaft axially extending from the gearhead and without the shaft. The bevel gear members manufactured with this method exhibit reduced runout and require simpler, less expensive tooling.

A method is described for assuring concentricity of a gear's pitch circle with its axis, the pitch circle having a non-constant radius about the axis. The method comprises the steps of: determining the gear's pitch circle and its position of maximum radial offset from the gears axis; positioning the gear in a chuck having a plurality of simultaneously movable jaws, the chuck having an axis which is continually concentric with respect to its jaws as they move, the position of maximum radial offset being positioned adjacent a chuck jaw so that when the jaws are moved to grip the gear, the axis of the gear is offset from the chuck axis by action of the jaws on the gear; placing the chuck and gripped gear in a machine tool adapted to machine the gear concentrically with the chuck's axis; and operating the machine tool to remove sufficient material from the gripped gear to bring the gear's axis into concentricity with the gear's pitch circle.

An elastic stress bushing comprising profiled prominences disposed at isoed locations, said profiled prominences having outer stressing surfaces, whereby the presence of the profiled prominences does not detract from the elastic properties of the overall stress bushing. This is achieved by providing for outwardly open grooves and at least one inwardly open groove on each bushing, which grooves are delimited by annular web segments and cylindrical stress covers. When the elastic bushing is compressed axially, it expands outward radially. In this way, the elastic bushing may support a workpiece, tool, hollow flywheel or sprocket, etc. from within the interior surface(s) of these structures.

Hydraulically actuated spline arbor and chuck devices having a novel configuration for the spline teeth to produce axially spaced straightening engagement and accurate centering of a splined part engaged by the arbor or chuck. The hydraulic actuation includes novel sealing means allowing a significant increase in the maximum hydraulic pressure obtainable and maximum permissible expansion of the spline without leakage as compared to prior seals rendering practical the relatively greater expansion for registration on pitch diameter or side teeth than in the case of cylindrical configurations. The invention is applicable to a variety of spline configurations including involute and square splines.
