Abstract: A method and apparatus that compensate radar channel length variation are provided. The method includes transmitting a signal from the transmitter, determining a response of each of the receivers to the transmitted signal, and storing the determined responses; for each stored response of the stored responses, calculating a path length of the transmitted signal; for each of the transmitters, determining and storing a median receive path difference in the path length between a transmitter and each receiver; for each receiver of the receivers, determining and storing a median receive path difference in the path length between a receiver and each transmitter; and compensating for the median receive path difference and the median transmit path difference by performing a frequency shift on or time delaying a signal to be transmitted by a transmitter or received by a receiver.

Abstract: A vehicle, system and method of driving the vehicle. A radar system obtains a measured location of an object in an environment of the vehicle. A processor predicts a location of the object, determines a distance between the predicted location of the object and the measured location of the object, determines a confidence level for the predicted location the object based on the determined distance, selects a tracking state for the object based on the confidence level, and drives the vehicle to avoid the object according to the tracking state of the object. The processor and radar system may be onboard the vehicle.

Abstract: A radar system mounted on a platform includes a transmitter turned off during a silent interval, and a receiver to receive one or more signals resulting from transmission by one or more other radars that transmit linear frequency modulated signals during the silent interval. A processor estimates parameters of the one or more other radars. The parameters include bandwidth and slope of the respective linear frequency modulated signal and the parameters are used to modify a transmitted signal or the processing by the radar system.

Abstract: A system and method to perform target detection includes transmitting frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) pulses as chirps from a radar system. The method also includes receiving reflections resulting from the chirps, and processing the reflections to obtain a range-chirp map for each beam associated with the transmitting. Curve detection is performed on the range-chirp map for each beam, and one or more targets is detected based on the curve detection.

Abstract: A radar system for a ground vehicle includes a MIMO system including a plurality of transmitters, a plurality of receivers, and a controller including an interpreter in communication with the plurality of transmitters and the plurality of receivers. The transmitters include a first transmitter and a plurality of second transmitters, and each of the transmitters includes a signal generator in communication with a transmitting antenna that is disposed to transmit a radar signal. Each of the radar signals is a linear-frequency-modulated continuous-wave (LFM-CW) radar signal including a chirp-start portion, and each of the receivers includes a receiving antenna that is disposed to receive reflected radar signals. The transmitters are controllable such that the chirp-start portions of the LFM-CW radar signals from the second transmitters have progressively increasing time delays as compared to the chirp-start portion of the LFM-CW radar signal from the first transmitter.

Abstract: A system and method to perform two-stage beamforming in a radar system includes obtaining an incoming signal vector x associated with a detected target. The method also includes performing coarse beamforming with a first set of k1 azimuthal angle θi and elevation angle φi combinations associated with each element of the vector, and selecting a selected area in an azimuth-elevation plane around a subset of the k1 azimuthal angle θi and elevation angle φi combinations for each element of the vector. Fine beamforming is performed in the selected area with a second set of k2 azimuthal angle θi and elevation angle φi combinations associated with each element of the vector. The second set of k2 azimuthal angle θi and elevation angle φi combinations is more closely spaced in the azimuth-elevation plane than the first set of k1 azimuthal angle θi and elevation angle φi combinations.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for determining a distance between a first radar system disposed on a vehicle and a second radar system disposed on the vehicle. A target reflector is moved along a track to a location along a perpendicular bisector of a baseline connecting the first radar system and the second radar system. A direct range measurement is obtained for at least one of the first radar system and the second radar system, and a bistatic range measurement is obtained between the first radar system and the second radar system. A processor determines the distance between the first radar system and the second radar system using the direct range measurement, the bistatic range measurement and a radial length of the target reflector.
