A system for determining the angular position of a synchronous motor includes an encoder with a friction wheel engaging a rotating surface of the motor. The friction wheel is spun by the rotation of the motor, and the encoder generates a signal corresponding to the angular position of the friction wheel. An independent, sensor is provided to generate a pulse once per revolution of the motor. The independent sensor detects the presence of a target on the rotating surface of the motor and generates the pulse when the target is proximate to the sensor. A controller receives the signal corresponding to the angular position of the friction wheel as well as the pulse generated by the independent sensor to determine the angular position of the motor. The controller compensates the angular position of the motor each time the pulse is generated, correcting accumulated position error.

The first and second phases are coupled to a first supply rail and a second supply rail, respectively, such that the brushless DC motor is in a first commutation state. The first phase is then decoupled from the first supply rail so as to allow first terminal to float during a window period. A first voltage difference between the first terminal and the second terminal is compared to a second voltage difference between the third terminal and the second terminal during the window period, and the brushless DC motor is commuted to a second commutation state if the first voltage difference is approximately equal to the second voltage difference.

When an overcurrent abnormality occurs, i.e., phase current of a motor-generator exceeds a permissible value, in a high rotational speed region, the electronic control unit performs control (upshift control) for shifting up an automatic transmission provided between the motor-generator and driving wheels, or control (neutral control) for bringing the transmission into a released state, so as to reduce the rotational speed of the motor-generator. If phase current is detected even when an all-gate turn-off command is generated to the inverter while the rotational speed of the motor-generator is reduced to be within a low rotational speed region under the upshift control or neutral control, the electronic control unit determines that a short-circuit fault occurs in the inverter.

The inverter includes switching elements. The switching elements have a characteristic that the withstand voltage of the switching elements decreases as the temperature of the inverter decreases. The ECU sets the stepped-up voltage, based on a temperature characteristic of the power storage device and a temperature characteristic of the inverter, so that the stepped-up voltage is increased within a range in which the stepped-up voltage does not exceed the withstand voltage. In this way, at low temperatures, deterioration of the power performance can be suppressed while the switching elements are protected.
