摘要: This invention relates to a head loading/unloading method for moving a head that reads storage medium away from that storage medium, and makes optimal unloading operation possible. In a storage device comprising a storage medium 6, head 4, actuator 3 and control circuits 9, when the amount of continuous time when there is no access reaches the unload starting time, the head 4 is moved away from the storage medium 6. This unload starting time is made to be variable and is changed according to the state of the device. Therefore, an optimal unloading operation that corresponds to the state of the device is possible, that also has a balance among device life, access time and resistance to shock.

摘要: A system for hardware intelligent speed monitoring and auto-retract is disclosed. The system contains a monitoring device that monitors the TACH (Tachometer) output of motor driver. The device provides a trigger to the signal processor and a retract mechanism to retract the actuator when the spindle motor speed is unexpectedly much higher or lower than normal speed. The system DSP (Digital Signal Processor) is unaware of such occurrence.

摘要: A method is provided for writing a servo-pattern on a storage medium. According to the method, first timing marks are written at a first radial position of the storage medium, and the head is moved to a second radial position. Time intervals between selected pairs of the first timing marks are measured, and other timing marks are written at the second radial position of the storage medium. The measuring step is performed after the moving step. In one preferred method, the steps of moving, measuring, and writing other timing marks are repeated until the servo-pattern is written on an entire surface of the storage medium. A method is also provided for generating an initial aligned pattern of timing marks for self-servo-writing on a storage medium.

摘要: A method and apparatus to control application of a drive current to a voice coil in a hard disk drive system modulates a periodic waveform between either a reference level and a signal associated with a stored back electromotive force (BEMF) in the voice coil. The drive current is applied to the voice coil during periods of time when the periodic waveform is modulated by the signal associated with the stored BEMF. The amplitude and duration of the drive current correspondingly decreases as the BEMF in the voice coil decreases. Thus, the voice coil is controlled based on its BEMF and is provided with decreasing power to move a head mechanism to or from a ramp assembly.

摘要: The magnitude and frequency of runout due to vibration of the cage of the spindle motor is detected. A plurality of servo patterns are written to a reference track having a clock pattern on the disc, and the plurality of servo patterns are then read over a plurality of revolutions of the disc using a clock head. The magnitude of position error of the clock head relative to the reference track is identified for each of the read servo patterns. The magnitude and frequency of runout due to cage vibration is identified from the position errors. Servo patterns are written to user tracks on the disc by identifying periods of low magnitude runout due to cage vibration, and writing the servo patterns to the user track during those periods of low magnitude runout.

摘要: A disc drive includes a base and a voice coil magnet attached to the base. The voice coil magnet has a first portion for providing a magnetic field having a first direction and magnitude, and a second portion for providing a magnetic field having a second direction and magnitude. The voice coil magnet also has a transition zone between the first portion and the second portion of the voice coil magnet where the magnetic field from the first portion substantially cancels the magnetic field from the second portion of the voice coil magnet. The disc drive also includes an actuator assembly rotatably attached to base. The actuator assembly includes a yoke, and a voice coil attached to the yoke of the actuator. The voice coil is positioned within the magnetic field of the voice coil magnet such that passing a current through the voice coil generates a second magnetic field to position the actuator assembly. A ferromagnetic material is attached to the actuator assembly. The ferromagnetic material is positioned within the magnetic field of the voice coil magnet to induce a force from the magnetic field of the voice coil magnet to drive the actuator to a park position.

摘要: A disk apparatus has a head carriage and a head carriage drive mechanism. The head carriage has a signal lead wire and a strip of flexible cable extending laterally from the head carriage in a direction X2. The head carriage drive mechanism has voice coil motors located on each side X2 and side X1 of the head carriage, in which a number of turns N2 in a drive coil of a voice coil motor on the X2 side is greater than a number of turns N1 in a drive coil of a voice coil motor on the opposite X1 side. As a result, the X2-side drive coil motor generates a propulsive force greater than that generated by the X1-side drive coil motor by an amount corresponding to the imbalance in load between the two sides.

摘要: A disc drive system and method of screening an actuator resonance includes a servo controller providing a multi-servo zone architecture. The servo controller partitions the disc into a plurality of servo zones. Each of the servo zones has a corresponding servo gain. When an actuator resonance is detected in one of the servo zones, the servo controller reduces the corresponding servo gain of the detected servo zone such that a drive with very low resonance at a certain zone does not affect the servo bandwidth of the other good zones. Accordingly, a drive with very low resonance is prevented from being scrapped. Further, the screening technique allows a drive to have an adequate servo margin for its normal operation after going through a resonance detection test.

摘要: A technique for self-servowriting a servopattern on a data storage medium is disclosed. An initial set of servopattern tracks is written by moving an actuator against a compliant structure (e.g., crashstop) with a first force applied thereto to hold the actuator in a first position to write a first track of the servopattern. The force is changed, thereby reaching a second position of the actuator against the compliant structure, at which a second track of the servopattern is written. The process is iterated for additional tracks. The distances (i.e., overlap) between pairs of written tracks are measured using a read element of the actuator, and this measured distance is compared to predetermined, desired distance. If the measured distance is within a specified tolerance, the process is complete; and if not, the tracks are erased and the process is repeated with changed forces applied to the actuator against the crashstop resulting in modified distances between tracks. The present invention overcomes the problem of self-servowriting an initial set of tracks of a servopattern, especially when the read element is separated from the write element in a direction along which the servowriting steps.

摘要: A technique, including a method and associated system, for multitrack positioning during self-servowriting on a storage medium, and for controlling error growth as the servowriting steps across the storage medium. Readback amplitudes of multiple bursts from previously written tracks are combined using a parabolic interpolation relationship, for positioning when writing bursts on a subsequent track. This technique is especially useful for systems in which the read element is separated from the write element in the direction in which the servowriting steps across the medium. Also disclosed is an associated technique for controlling error growth, in which a reference waveform is derived and stored for use when writing subsequent tracks. The individual reference adjustments resultant from the multitrack positioning signal are combined in a weighted sum which controls error growth when the weights are calculated properly, as disclosed herein.
