The cutting edge is positive in the region of the nose and the first portions and the chip former groove adjacent thereto have a first portion which slopes towards a base of the insert, any chip deflecting portion thereof being sufficiently spaced from the cutting edge to allow for chips to have reached a desired minimal length prior to their deflection.

    摘要: An insert for a milling cutter has a chip face and a bottom face which are interconnected by side surfaces. The intersection of side surfaces with the chip face forms four cutting edges. Each side surface is beveled at its intersection with a cutting edge to form a planar clearance face, the width of which increases toward one of the cutting corners. Each cutting edge includes a main edge portion, a corner edge portion, and a secondary edge portion. Each secondary edge portion extends inwardly from an associated secondary edge at an angle no greater than four degrees. At each corner, a secondary edge portion of one cutting edge forms an actual angle with a main edge portion of another cutting edge greater than ninety degrees. The insert is mounted at a negative radial rake and a positive axial rake such that such actual angle presents to a workpiece an effective angle of ninety degrees to cut a ninety degree shoulder in the workpiece.

    摘要: A cutting insert having a generally polygonal insert body having a top face, a bottom face and a plurality of side walls extending therebetween. The juncture of each side wall with the top face defines a peripheral cutting edge. A chip breaking groove is formed in the top face and extends alongside the cutting edges. The chip breaking groove includes a descending wall which inclines downwardly from the cutting edges and a back wall which inclines upwardly from the rearward edge of the outside wall. The back wall includes a nose portion adjacent the cutting corner of the insert. The nose portion includes a tip and a pair of side edges which are disposed at an angle relative to the adjacent cutting edges of the insert body such that the width of the chip groove increases as it extends away from the cutting corner. A pair of shoulders are disposed on opposite sides of the nose portion and are disposed at an angle relative to the cutting edges of the insert body such that the width of the chip groove decreases as it extends from the cutting corner. In a preferred embodiment, the angle of inclination of the back wall relative to the top surface of the insert body increases as the back wall extends away from the cutting corner.

Each of the blades have a leading face side, a trailing face side, and a relieved land surface bridging the leading face side and trailing face side. The relieved land surfaces are interrupted by a plurality of spaced V-shaped notches to form a plurality of cutting edges at the intersection of the leading face side and the relieved land surface. The plurality of spaced V-shaped notches further define a plurality of cutting teeth having a leading face edge, a trailing face edge, and a flat land therebetween. A notch relief groove generates a positive relief at the plurality of cutting edges, leading face edges, and trailing face edges such that the cutting performance of the rotary cutting tool is significantly enhanced.
