Each skimmer has a frame supporting and housing pumps, sensors, computers, and piping for separating the pollutant from the water and moving it to a collection and storage barge for further processing. The skimming operation is controlled by varying the approach angle of a skimmer toeboard, and the depth of the front end of the skimmer in the water. Hydraulic cylinders are used to pivotally position the toeboard. Air bags are used to control the depth of the skimmer in the water.

A collection device (10) or a recovery device (13) made up of several interconnected collection devices is usable in a method for collecting a floating liquid, e.g., oil, from the surface of a body of a first liquid, e.g., water. Recovery device (13) includes one or more collection devices (110, 210, 310, 410), each of which includes a flotation member (112, 212, 312, 412) having a first regulator frame (114, 214, 314, 414) connected to a receiving tray (118, 218, 318, 418) having a suction port (120, 220, 320, 420). The respective suction ports of the receiving trays are connected to one or more pumps (22, 22null, 24, 24null) which transport the collected floating liquid from the receiving trays to a collection conduit (34). A liquid separator (36) may be connected to the collection conduit (34) for receiving the collected liquids and separating them. The pumps may be operated by movement of the body of liquid on which the device (13) floats, such as the natural wave action of a body of water. A method of collecting the floating liquid utilizes the collection device (10) or recovery device (13) and may include operating the pumps (22, 22null, 24, 24null) by wave-induced relative movement of the individual collection devices (10, 110, 210, 310, 410).

The system also includes at least first and second suction pumps, the first pump acting to draw a water and oil mixture into the outer pipe, and the second pump acting to draw a mixture having a high percentage of oil into said inner pipe. Water is extracted from the mixture and the oil is stored.

This invention is simple in design, effective in functionality, cost effective and is vitally important and beneficial to the enviroment in saving our oceans, beaches, marine wildlife and to prevent ecological contamination. This oil spill recovery system is designed to boom, skim and vacuum the oil or hazardous spills from the surface of fresh or salt water in semi rough or calm seas. The system is designed to be towed through the water by two ships. For the purpose of towing the system, a steel cable will run through two straps on the front of each unit in the system and attach to each ship. Each unit will be attached together like a chain with a apron to contain the spill like a dam, to push and build an oil level by drawing the contamined water and directing the spill at a high rate of flow through each of the five ports on the front of each unit by gravity flow or by the vacuum system to tanks on a ship. The system can be used in shallow water right up to the shore line as well as out in open sea. The system is designed to be stored on a ship and can be rapidly deployed in various lengths as needed. The computer system on the ship will continuously monitor the progress during the clean up operation through various sensors mounted on each unit and can adjust or change the function of any individual unit as well as shut units off and on as needed. Each unit has built in airbags, an automatic height adjustment, a headboard and toe board each incorporated with built in lights for the system to be fully utilized for day or night use. The system's units are reusable and can be manufactured in a wide variety of sizes from stainless steel and available commerical electrical components. Each unit will be connected together by steel pin with an attached apron made of nylon corded reinforced rubber. The system's design is that each unit will be connected to a main vacuum hose as well as wiring for the computer on the back of each unit. All computer operations, wiring, vacuum hose and all connections will be run from a ship to each unit in the chain before system is to be deployed from ship for clean up operation.

A totally biodegradable oil absorption material is utilized to clean up oil spills on both land and water. Particles of coconut coir pith between about one-quarter of an inch and one inch in size are utilized for this purpose. The flakes or granules of coconut coir pith are spread upon the surface of the oil spill. The coconut coir pith readily absorbs the oil and remains in a form that can be easily recovered by scooping or raking. Once recovery is complete, the oil-saturated coconut coir pith can be subjected to squeezing by pressure to liberate the oil collected. Following extraction of the absorbed oil, the coconut coir pith can be reused for subsequent oil cleanup operations. Also, the oil extracted from the coconut coir pith is not contaminated and can be used as well. Coconut coir pith is a byproduct obtained from the husks of coconuts as those husks are processed to make fiber ropes and other articles.
