    摘要: Magnetic recording media having a protective carbon overcoat adapted to protect the magnetic recording layer from surface contact events and corrosion. The carbon overcoat includes at least two layers. A first layer is adapted to protect the magnetic recording layer from surface contact events and corrosion. The second layer is disposed on the first layer and is adapted to enhance the bonding of a lubricant to the carbon overcoat and to minimize head degradation. The magnetic recording media of the present invention advantageously enables the use of thin carbon overcoats, enhancing areal density, while maintaining good tribological properties.

    摘要: An equipment and method for inline infrared (IR) ultraviolet (UV) irradiation of recording media is disclosed. The components of the equipment include a saddle for holding a recording medium such as a disc, a conveyor that travels the saddle through a tunnel in which one or more IR and UV lamps are positioned to direct IR and UV light on the recording media traveling through the tunnel. The efficacy of the bonding of the lubricant to the recording medium by UV light is substantially enhanced by exposing the recording medium to IR light prior to exposure to UV light.

The lubrication layer contains a hydroxyl- or a carboxyl-modified compound as a lubricating material. The alcohol-based coupling layer contains, for example, lower alcohol as a main component and is deposited on the carbon-based protection layer, for example, by vapor deposition. The alcohol-based coupling layer may be replaced by a layer containing lower alcohol. The carbon-based protection layer may be deposited by plasma CVD.

    摘要: A method refines a lubricant comprising a compound having a perfluoropolyether structure via supercritical extraction. A lubricant is refined using the method and a magnetic recording medium that utilizes the refined lubricant. The refined lubricant exhibits excellent lubrication performance and long term stability in the magnetic recording medium. In one embodiment of the supercritical extraction, the lubricant contacts an extracting medium of supercritical carbon dioxide under a predetermined condition in a pressure vessel to remove ionic impurities and perfluoropolyether compounds having a weak polarity terminal group contained in the lubricant.
