A drive axle assembly includes a differential case that is operably coupled to a pair of axle shafts that drive vehicle wheels. A locking mechanism includes a clutch housing that is externally mounted to the differential case. The clutch housing defines a fluid chamber in which first and second sets of discs are mounted. The first set of discs is fixed for movement with the clutch housing and the second set of discs is fixed for movement with one of the axle shafts. An actuating mechanism is used to selectively compress the discs together to lock the clutch housing and associated differential case to the axle shaft under predetermined conditions. A fitting is fixed to the axle housing that defines a fluid path to connect an external fluid supply to the actuating mechanism. The fitting is resistant to torsional and axial movement resulting from the lock mechanism moving to a locked position by the actuating mechanism. The actuating mechanism includes a piston housing held fixed to the axle housing by the fitting as an actuation plate compresses the discs together. A piston is mounted within a piston chamber formed within the piston housing. Actuation thrust force is transferred from the stationary piston to the actuation plate through a pair of thrust bearings.

The ring gear, first case half, and second case half are all connected together via a single bolted joint with the case split line being located behind the ring gear. The differential housing is supported on a pair of tapered roller bearings having a diverging apex configuration to reduce cup rotation. The pinion gear is solely supported by a pair of tapered roller bearings positioned on opposite sides of the ring gear. A two-piece pinion cage supports both pinion bearings and facilitates the setting of preload with the use of external shims.

A wheel differential having an improved differential lock assembly is provided. The differential includes a differential housing and a differential cage rotatably supported on the differential housing by a set of bearings. The differential also includes a clutch assembly having a first member fixed to the differential cage and a second member configured to receive an axle half shaft extending from the differential cage for rotation with the axle half shaft. Finally, the differential includes an improved differential lock assembly that selectively shifts the first and second clutch members into engagement to prevent relative rotation between the differential cage and axle half shaft. The lock assembly includes a shift chamber that is supported on an outer race member of the set of bearings. The shift chamber may be formed within a bearing cap that is coupled to the differential housing and disposed about at least a portion of the bearing set. The lock assembly further includes a piston disposed within the shift chamber and a pushrod coupled to the piston. A shift arm is also coupled to the pushrod and is configured to engage the second member of the clutch assembly. The piston may be urged in a first direction and a second direction, opposite the first direction, within the shift chamber by the application of biasing and/or fluid forces.

The tandem axle assembly includes a forward axle assembly and a rear axle assembly and an intermediate drive shaft assembly extending between the two axle assemblies. The forward and rear axle assemblies both include a pinion gear rotating responsive to an inter-axle differential and a ring gear in mesh with the pinion gear. The forward pinion gear is offset from the forward ring gear by a first predetermine distance while the rear pinion gear is offset from the rear ring ear by a second predetermined distance. The second predetermined distance is greater than zero, but is less than the first predetermined distance. The variation in offsets enables both equal working angles in the intermediate drive shaft assembly and a reduction in those angles as compared to conventional tandem axle assemblies. Further, the variation in offset results in stronger and quieter gearing.

The stop ribs are disposed at nonuniform distances between successive ribs in order to prevent oil from entering a breather chamber of the housing. The relative spacing between successive ribs allows the breather structure to prevent oil traveling at varying speeds from entering the breather chamber. The ribs have an upper surface which is disposed at declining, or obtuse, angles with respect to an interior of the housing, and a lower surface which acts to receive oil rising from a bottom of the housing.
