Abstract: An endodontic irrigating instrument comprises a handpiece having an internal liquid passage therethrough extending from a liquid inlet formed in the proximal end of the handpiece to a liquid ejection nozzle provided at the distal end. The handpiece incorporates a suction or vacuum pump of the airjet or ejector type which comprises an air nozzle connected by a passage with an air inlet formed also in the proximal end of the handpiece. The vacuum chamber of the suction pump is connected by a separate internal passage in the handpiece with an aspiration needle provided adjacent to the liquid ejection nozzle. The proximal end of the handpiece is designed to be fitted with a coupling joint attached to a multiple-channel flexible hose which is conventionally used to supply compressed air and pressurized water from a dental unit to conventional air-driven dental turbine tools. Thus, the endodontic irrigating instrument can be used interchangeably with existing turbine tools.

Abstract: The invention relates to a flexible diaphragm which is surrounded at its periphery by an annular ring. This diaphragm is implanted into the pulp chamber after endodontic treatment and provides a covering for the root canal system to prevent infiltration of bacteria and other sources of infection. The device finds particular utility in the context of post-operative inflammation and/or infection in the supporting tissues which may result in build up of intraosseous pressure. The flexibility of the diaphragm material permits it to expand under pressure, thereby minimizing any discomfort which may be otherwise experienced by the patient.

Abstract: A health services combination irrigation and aspiration device adapted to serve more than one irrigation function and to require the use of only one hand by the operator. The instrument includes a handpiece, a supply station and a control for the regulation and selection among fluid and vacuum means. While the instrument is well adapted to dental work, particularly root canal methodology, it also supplies a need for a general purpose medical instrument which can provide suction and lavage of a tissue or organ surface with one or more of selected medicinal solutions, including distilled water or saline solution. Notably, the handpiece tip system is small enough to allow easy access to remote tissue surfaces while the angled design allows access to difficult to reach interior surfaces.
