A METHOD IS DISCLOSED FOR THE LOW TEMPERATURE PREPARATION OF A LITHIUM BASE LUBRICATING GREASE HAVING THE DESIRED PORPERTIES WHEREIN THE NEED FOR EITHER SHEARING OR MILLING IS ELIMINATED. FURTHERMORE, THE RESULTING GREASE HAS EXCELLENT MECHANICAL STABILITY. THIS METHOD COMPRISES RAISING THE TOP TEMPERATURE OF THE SAPONIFIED MIXTURE TO WITHIN A SPECIFIED NARROW TEMPERATURE RANGE. THE LATTER IS RELATED TO THE ANILINE POINT OF THE LUBRICATING OIL IN THE COMPOSITION WHOSE TOP TEMPERATURE FALLS WITHIN THE AFOREMENTIONED TEMPERATURE RANGE.

In a solvent extraction system utilizing a counter-current extraction column and an extractive distillation stripper for recovery of C6-C8 aromatic hydrocarbons, the feed is divided into light and heavy fractions containing, respectively, C6-C7 and C8 aromatics. The light fraction is introduced to the extraction column at an intermediate level along with the overhead stream from the stripper column, while the heavy fraction is introduced to the extraction column at a lower level. This procedure avoids loss of C8 aromatic components to the raffinate.

A process for desulfurizing vacuum bottoms derived from a residual oil which comprises contacting said bottoms with metallic sodium in the presence of hydrogen, contacting the sludge-containing product thus produced with an aliphatic hydrocarbon, and separating the sulfur and sodium-containing sludge from the hydrocarbon solution of the desulfurized resid. Water washing the separated sludge removes sulfur and sodium, enabling the remaining hydrocarbon portion to be reclaimed.
