    Abstract: A brush wear detector comprised of an L-shaped leaf spring having the outer end of its longer leg mounted on a first insulating member in fixed relationship to a spring support for a self-winding, brush-biasing spring. A second dielectric member is secured to the leaf spring between the ends thereof and projects outward from the leaf spring into engagement with an uncoiled section of a brush-biasing spring. The free end of the leaf spring is held away from engagement with the brush-biasing spring support, thereby being electrically isolated from it, when a new brush is mounted in operating position under the brush-biasing spring. When the brush becomes worn a pre-determined amount the brush-biasing spring moves in a direction away from the second dielectric member and so enables the leaf spring to force its free end into electrically conducting engagement with the electrically energized spring support. Establishment of that conductive relationship produces a signal that actuates a brush wear indicating circuit that is operatively connected to the leaf spring.

    Abstract: A brush wear indicator for an electrical machine including a holder for slidably mounting a brush, a self-winding, brush-biasing spring having one of its ends mounted in generally fixed operative relationship on the brush holder in combination with an indicating means electrically connected to either a contact, or a membrane switch, mounted on the relatively fixed end of the brush-biasing spring in a position such that it is contacted by a coiled portion of the spring responsive to the occurrence of a predetermined degree of brush wear.     Abstract: A wear-indicating brush and warning circuit adapted to convey an indication to an operator that a dynamoelectric machine provided with such a brush is in need of maintenance before the brush wears to the point that a rotor contact surface is damaged by contact with electrical connections to the brush are disclosed. A brush (10) having current carrying pigtail leads (16) embedded therein includes a wear-detecting wire (20) embedded in the brush a short distance (A) beyond the lowest extent of the pigtail leads (16). The wire (20) is insulated over its periphery, including its tip (24), the insulation (26) being abraded by contact with the rotor contact surface (50), so that the wire (20) senses the voltage present thereon. Non-latching warning circuits (66, 66a) are disclosed, with and without the use of an isolating resistor within the dynamoelectric machine to permit the use of a single wire between the machine and the warning circuit.Also disclosed is a warning circuit for indicating that an input is electrically connected to a voltage, for indicating that a line (20) has contacted a rotor contact surface. The voltage sensed may be negative or positive, over a wide range, so that the positioning and number of brushes (10) is irrelevant. The circuit (92) includes an oscillating voltage source (122) and comparison circuits (122, 124, 128) giving a warning indication when an input line is connected to a voltage and is unable to follow the oscillating voltage.

    Abstract: Brush holder assemblies are disclosed which prevent the spring, or conductor and terminal connector from protruding out of the brush holder and damaging the motor commutator. The constructions employ a brush housing having a restraining bridge at the front end thereof and a terminal connector having a rearwardly extending flange. As the brush wears down, it and the terminal connector to which it is attached move forwardly in the brush housing under bias of a coil spring. Upon striking the restraining bridge the terminal connector pivots forwardly under tension of the spring thereby wedging the flange against the top of the housing preventing further movement of the brush assembly.
