The invention is directed to a counting scale which implements a load cell assembly for the measurement of weight used in counting calculations. A load cell in such an assembly has a beam structure with beams positioned parallel to each other in at least one plane. Generally, these parallel beams are attached to a stationary base and have sensing means attached between the two beams and the base. These sensing means are preferably resonators which have resonant frequencies that vary in response to an applied force on the load cell. A controller is included in the assembly to drive these resonators, convert their frequency outputs to digital values, and correct for various environmental effects, to obtain an accurate weight measurement for use in the counting scale.

One of the core elements is mounted on one of the bridging members and the other core element is C-shaped and mounted on the other bridging member with the ends of the C-shape in close proximity to the first core member thereby providing magnetic gaps whose widths are aligned with the cylinder axis. Windings around the ends of the C-shaped core provide electrical connection for an inductance which is variable as a function of the widths of the gaps and thus also of the axial displacement between the bridging members.

The displacement or force input to be measured is applied to one of the masses in the allowable direction. The displacement of the masses with respect to each other is sensed by a sensor. In a preferred embodiment, the sensor comprises a Hall effect sensor attached to one of the masses positioned between two magnets attached to the other mass. Movement of one mass relative to the other changes the magnetic field around the Hall effect sensor. The change is sensed by the Hall effect sensor.

A detection element is disposed on the underside of the substrate generally above the force field emitter for detecting the presence of the force field and for producing signals representing force field strength and thus the distance of the detecting element from the force field emitter.
