摘要:
The embodiments of the invention relate to video streaming, particularly adaptive and selective transmissions, for example, based on feedback reports received from receivers. The feedback reports are used to determine transmission rates and which content elements within the transmission buffer, for example, are to be dropped or not sent by the sender, and which are to be sent.

A method for presenting audio-visual content for a display includes defining a window associated with a program having associated audio signals on the display. At least two audio positions for the audio signals are defined based upon a position of the window on the display, and a position of at least two speakers associated with the display. The audio signals are modified based upon the audio positions in such a manner that the audio signals appear to originate from at least a pair of locations within the window.

Systems and methods are disclosed for providing access to a thumbnail image that is embedded within an image file along with a corresponding main image. An exemplary method involves receiving a request from a client for the thumbnail image. The thumbnail image is retrieved from an image host. The entire image file is not retrieved from the image host. The thumbnail image may be sent to the client. Alternatively, the thumbnail location information may be sent to the client. Retrieving the thumbnail image from the image host may involve identifying a location of the thumbnail image within the image file, and retrieving data from the image file corresponding to the location.

A system and method are provided for sending transmission control protocol (TCP) messages in a local area network (LAN). The method comprises: selecting a TCP streaming application; transmitting message segments at a rate responsive to a congestion window parameter; and, maintaining at least the congestion window parameter during the session, regardless of idle time between transmitted segments. In some aspects, the method further comprises: selecting a threshold level. Then, incrementing the congestion window parameter with an increment in response to receiving acknowledgements includes increasing the congestion window parameter until the congestion window parameter equals the threshold level. Additionally, the method further comprises: in response to not receiving an acknowledgment, maintaining the threshold level; and, in response to not receiving an acknowledgement, maintaining the congestion window parameter.

Embodiments of the present invention are directed to a remote desktop communication protocol that includes spatial and temporal compression techniques. Multimedia presentation data is generated at a server from a source. A compression facility modifies the presentation data by both spatially and temporally compressing the presentation data to transmittable data. In some embodiments, a check is performed to ensure that the least amount of data is selected prior to sending the transmittable data to a remote client. The remote client receives the transmittable data and re-constructs the original multimedia presentation data. In some embodiments that use lossy compression, the reconstruction may not exactly re-construct the original multimedia presentation data. Once re-created, the remote client presents the presentation data at the remote client. The presentation data could be audio, video, or other data or a combination of them.

A method for tracking a reference picture on an electronic device is described. The method includes receiving a bitstream. The method also includes decoding a portion of the bitstream to produce a decoded reference picture. The method further includes tracking the decoded reference picture in a decoded picture buffer (DPB) with reduced overhead referencing. The method additionally includes decoding a picture based on the decoded reference picture.

Aspects of the present invention are related to systems, methods and apparatus for automatic quality assessment of a video sequence. According to a first aspect of the present invention, a quality index may be generated by combining a spatial quality index and a temporal quality index. According to a second aspect of the present invention, a spatial quality index may be calculated using a modified exponential moving average model to pool multi-scale structural similarity indices computed from test frame—reference frame pairs. According to a third aspect of the present invention, a temporal quality index may be generated by averaging multi-scale structural similarity indices computed from difference image pairs, wherein one difference image is formed between reference frames and another difference image is formed between a reference frame and a test frame.

Systems and methods for enhanced navigation of streaming video are disclosed. An exemplary method involves receiving a video as it is streamed from a server over a computer network. A first user request is received to display a first navigation video strip on the display device. The first navigation video strip includes a first plurality of video frames from the video. In response to the first user request, first instructions are obtained for displaying the first navigation video strip. The first navigation video strip is then displayed on the display device in accordance with the first instructions.

The number of audio/visual packets that are sent over a wireless channel of a wireless network and that are effectively lost at a client application is reduced by determining the number of packets that were effectively lost during a measurement period and by selecting at a server application a MAC-layer retransmission value that is based on the number of packets that are effectively lost during a measurement period. The number of packets that were effectively lost during the measurement period includes a total number of packets that were never received by the client application during the measurement period and a total number of packets that arrived after a corresponding deadline for a packet during the measurement period.
