A three cone rock bit includes an improved circulation system for drilling fluid which increases the horizontal flow vector of the fluid adjacent the bottom surface of the hole being drilled. A pair of nozzles, located near the hole perimeter and between adjacent pairs of drilling cones, inject drilling fluid at one side of the hole. An extended pickup tube terminating between the remaining pair of drilling cones and close to the bottom of the hole being drilled channels fluid from the bottom of the hole to the annulus between the hole and the drill string.

A large hole earth boring bit with a clevis-type coupling for mounting the rolling cutters to the bit. The mounting apparatus includes a first member having two ends with aligned holes and a second member having its end inserted between the two ends. The end of the second member has an aperture that is spaced slightly out of alignment with the apertures in the first member, providing a generally elliptical passage. Bearing surfaces prevent them from coming into alignment. A pair of wedges are inserted into the elliptical passage and drawn together to exert a force in the direction toward alignment of the apertures. The force exerted is transmitted into the base, positively locking the two members together.

A sealing system for a rotary rock bit acts as a barrier to the pulverized cuttings and other materials in the borehole and prevents the materials from entering the bearing area through the cone mouth opening of the cone cutter. The bearing rollers are substantially captured in a groove machined into the cone cutter. This allows a seal unit to be located at a substantial distance from the hostile drilling environment and increases seal life. The shirttail portion of the bit body and the base of the cone cutter cooperate to retard materials in the borehole from contacting the seal unit. The sealing system is provided without reducing the bearing capacity of the bit's bearing system.

A raise boring head which includes a plurality of rolling cutters distributed over the head and including circumferentially spaced gauge cutters. Each cutter has a rotatable part and a support shaft supporting the rotatable part with the ends of the support shafts carried in saddles fixed to the body of the raise boring head. Each end of each support shaft is formed to a rectangular shape and fits into a rectangular slot in the respective saddle and is secured therein as by bolts. The radially outer sides of the saddles for the gauge cutters are provided with hard wear resistant inserts to reduce the wear thereon.

A pressure relief device used in a drill bit lubrication system having a flexible membrane defining the outer portion of such lubrication system in a vent passage through the body of the drill bit with the flexible membrane including a puncture or other opening therethrough which seals the lubrication system at all pressure differentials below a pre-selected pressure differential and at such pre-selected pressure differential opens to relieve the pressure differential. The pressure relief device may be constructed to function in both directions, i.e., to relieve both excess pressure within the lubrication system and to relieve against excess external pressures, with the pre-selected relieving pressure differentials being the same or different in opposite directions. A lubricant reservoir is positioned in each of the three arms of a three cone rotary rock bit to provide lubricant to the bearings located between the cone cutters and the bearing shafts upon which they rotate. A seal is positioned between the cone cutters and the bearing shafts to retain lubricant in the bearing area and to prevent borehole fluids and debris from entering the bearing area. A flexible diaphragm positioned in the lubricant reservoir divides the reservoir into a lubricant portion and a pressure equalizing portion. A vent passage extends from the pressure equalizing portion of the lubricant reservoir to an area on the exterior surface of the bit wherein the borehole fluid pressure on the bit is substantially the same as the borehole fluid pressure on the seal.

The mounting head has scraper assemblies adjacent to the cutters disposed for clearing a path in advance of the cutters. The scraper assemblies are latchingly coupled to the mounting head and resiliently mounted to facilitate their withdrawal from the walls and facing upon encountering nonyielding rock, earth and like substances.
