The object of the present invention is a process of preparation of a graft copolymer obtained by pre-irradiation grafting of vinyl monomers onto polyolefins or fluorinated polyethylenes, in particular, of grafting acrylic or methacrylic acid onto polyethylene and/or polypropylene and subsequently loading a metal, such as a transition metal on the graft copolymer obtained. Such metal-loaded graft copolymers find use, especially as catalysts, e.g. for hydrogenation reactions.

A glass fiber reinforced flexible composite material is obtained by dispersing or embedding glass fiber in a fluororesin, which is a graft copolymer obtained by grafting a crystalline fluoro-polymer to an elastomeric fluoro-polymer. For example, the graft copolymer is obtained by graft polymerization of vinylidene fluoride with an elastomeric copolymer of vinylidene fluoride, chlorotrifluoroethylene and an unsaturated peroxy compound. The composite material possesses the physical and chemical properties characteristic of fluororesins and is flexible and easily melt processable. Sheets of this composite material using a glass fiber cloth have a soft feel and can easily be joined by high-frequency welding.

This invention relates to a method for graft-copolymerizing vinyl chloride monomer to a polyfluorine resin to produce resins of improved physical properties and processability parameters. The vinyl chloride monomer and polyfluorine resin are first treated in a highly alkaline medium and at a high temperature, and the mixture is stirred. Suspension agent(s), water and an initiator are added to the mixture after the temperature thereof has been lowered. The resultant mixture which has been stirred and homogenized is heated to a temperature at which polymerization is completed. Thereafter the mixture is neutralized, washed, and dried. A product having improved impact strength and resistance to heat and abrasion results.
