摘要: A user programmable hearing aid allows a user to select acoustical configuration programs that provide optimum performance for the user. The user may cycle through and evaluate various available programs by momentarily pressing a push button on the hearing aid housing. When a preferred program is active, the user can press the push button for an extended time to designate that program as a selected program. The acoustical configuration programs include initial-tuning programs that are operable in an initial-tuning mode and fine-tuning programs that are operable in a fine-tuning mode. The hearing aid may also operate in a Configuration Mode wherein configuration settings may be changed using the push button and a volume control. In the Configuration Mode, a clinician or patient may easily change configuration settings manually, with no need to connect the apparatus to a computer or other programming interface.

摘要: A programmable apparatus improves perception of sound by a person. In one embodiment, the apparatus includes a processor, digital-to-analog converter, audio output section and means for generating first and second control signals. The processor executes one or more available programs for processing digital audio signals based on control signals. The digital-to-analog converter generates output analog audio signals based on the digital audio signals. The audio output section receives and amplifies the output analog audio signals, generates audible sound based thereon and provides the audible sound to the person. The memory stores programs for processing the digital audio signals. Based on an action by the person, a first control signal is generated which causes the processor to switch from one available program to another available program so that the person may cycle through and evaluate each of the available programs. Also based on an action by the person, a second control signal is generated which causes the processor to designate at least one of the available programs as a chosen program for continued use.

摘要: An otoplastic for production of behind-the-ear hearing aids. The hearing aid includes a preferably flexible signal conductor, such as an acoustic tube positioned in the auditory canal, whereby the otoplastic matches the individual anatomy of the patient and its locating part is in the form of a clip, which, at least partly arched, follows the outer edge of the cavum conchae. A branch following the edge of the cavum conchae transforms, above the antitragus, into a bent crosspiece traversing the cavum conchae and extending in the direction of the porous acusticus externus. The end section of the crosspiece lies in the upper section of the auditory canal and widens to accept the signal conductor (42).

摘要: The present invention relates to a system for improving a user's hearing and more particularly to a receiver system used in the system. In one embodiment, the receiver system has a housing and a plurality of arms extending from the housing for positioning and suspending the receiver within the ear canal of a user. Each of the arms may be formed from a flexible, plastic material or a bendable wire. In a second embodiment, the receiver system is surrounded by a disc formed from a sound filtering material. When installed in a hearing aid system, the receiver is separated from the microphone. When installed in a tinnitus/hyperacusis device, the receiver is separated from the body of the instrument.

摘要: The perception of sound in the absence of a stimulus external to one's own ear is commonly referred to as “tinnitus”. However, other sounds such as otoacoustic emissions, may occur in the absence of an external stimulus. These sounds may be audible or inaudible. A means of reducing such sounds is presented. For the audible case, the device first measures the sound and then injects a sound of proper frequency content thus canceling the tinnitus or otoacoustic emission. The inaudible case requires other means of sensing the perceived sound. Suppression of the noise perceived by one suffering from inaudible tinnitus is outlined. Such a response may be processed similar to the microphone signal acquired for the audible case. Sound of proper frequency content is then injected into the affected ear and the neurological response due to the generated sound would then cancel the inaudible tinnitus.

摘要: A tinnitus method and device for providing relief to a person suffering from the disturbing effects of tinnitus is described. The method can be implemented entirely in software to spectrally modify an audio signal in accordance with a predetermined masking algorithm which modifies the intensity of the audio signal at selected frequencies. A predetermined masking algorithm is described which provides intermittent masking of the tinnitus wherein, at a comfortable listening level, during peaks of the audio signal the tinnitus is completely obscured, whereas during troughs the perception of the tinnitus occasionally emerges. In practice it has been found that such intermittent masking provides an immediate sense of relief, control and relaxation for the person, whilst enabling sufficient perception of the tinnitus for habituation and long term treatment to occur. Advantageously the predetermined masking algorithm is specifically tailored to the audiometric configuration of the person. For example, the masking algorithm may be partly tailored to the hearing loss characteristic of the person. A tinnitus rehabilitation device used in conjunction with a personal sound reproducing system is also described.

摘要: Tinnitus is defined as sound(s) heard by an individual when no external sound is present and often takes the form of a hissing, ringing, chirping or clicking sound which may be either intermittent or constant. According to the American Tinnitus Association, tinnitus affects tens of millions of Americans and many suffer so severely from tinnitus they are not able to function normally on a daily basis. Unfortunately the exact cause or causes of tinnitus are not understood by the medical community and thus many tinnitus sufferers are told by their doctors to nulllearn to live with itnull. In accordance with novel aspects of Applicant's monofrequency tinnitus patient treatment apparatus and process, phase cancellation effects are achieved by utilizing an externally generated sound which is subjectively selected by the monofrequency tinnitus patient to match in both tone and loudness his or her tinnitus sound. This subjectively selected externally generated sound wave which matches in tone and loudness the patient's tinnitus sound, is either (i) sequentially phase shifted through a plurality of phase shift sequence steps totaling at least 180 degrees or (ii) alternatively is directly phase shifted in essentially a single step motion into a 180 degree, out-of-phase reciprocal, canceling relationship with the patient determined tinnitus tone. The sequential steps of the phase shifted tone or the directly phase shifted tone are applied to the tinnitus patient to effect cancellation or diminishment of the patient's tinnitus.
