The thickness of the birefringent crystal is set so that the wavelengths selected by the birefringent crystal for two laser oscillation modes whose directions of polarization are normal to each other differ from each other.

    摘要: An electrode is formed in a predetermined pattern on one surface of a unipolarized MgO-LiNbO.sub.3 substrate that is a ferroelectric substance and possesses a non-linear optical effect. The substrate is subjected to corona electrical charging by the electrode and a corona wire disposed above another surface of the substrate which is opposite to the electrode-side surface, and hence an electric field is applied to the substrate. When localized domain reversals are created on areas where the electrode faces the substrate, a vessel is attached to the electrode-side surface of the substrate. While a resulting closed space is kept in a vacuum by a vacuum pump but the opposite-side surface of the substrate relative to the electrode-side surface is in a non-vacuum, an electric field is applied to the substrate.

    摘要: An optical wavelength converting device comprises an optical waveguide device. The optical waveguide device is provided with a waveguide, which is constituted of a solid laser medium doped with a rare earth metal and a nonlinear optical material for converting a wavelength. The solid laser medium and said nonlinear optical material are overlaid one upon the other. A cladding is formed of a material having a lower refractive index than the waveguide and accommodates the waveguide therein. Two edge faces of the optical waveguide device serve as a resonator for a laser beam, which has been produced by the solid laser medium.

    摘要: An optical wavelength converter module includes an optical wavelength converter device having a cladding and a waveguide which is disposed in the cladding and has a higher refractive index than the cladding, at least one of the cladding and the waveguide being made of a nonlinear optical material, whereby the wavelength of a fundamental which is propagating in the waveguide is converted. The optical wavelength converter module also includes a semiconductor laser for emitting a laser beam which is introduced as the fundamental into the waveguide. The semiconductor laser is driven with a pulsed drive current. The duration of the drive current pulses is made short enough to enable the semiconductor laser to produce a higher peak output power than when it is continuously driven, and it is made longer then a duration which falls within the range of pulse durations wherein the input coupling efficiency decreases as the pulse duration decreases and at which the wavelength conversion efficiency is equal to that which is achieved when the semiconductor laser is continuously driven.

    摘要: A bulk crystal type optical wavelength converter device is made of a monocrystalline nonlinear optical material (3,5-dimethyl-1-(4-nitrophenyl)pyrazole, referred to as PRA). A linearly polarized fundamental having a wavelength ranging from 900 to 4000 nm is applied to the bulk monocrystalline nonlinear optical material to achieve angular phase matching of the type I for obtaining a second harmonic of the fundamental. An optical wavelength converter module comprises a fiber type optical wavelength converter device and a light source device. The optical wavelength converter device includes a core made of a monocrystal of the PRA which has a crystal orientation such that the c-axis thereof extends substantially along the axis of the core. The light source device applies, to the optical wavelength converter device, a fundamental which is linearly polarized in the direction of the a-axis or b-axis of the crystal which is normal to the c-axis.
