Abstract: A vehicle and a locking assembly are disclosed. The locking assembly includes a pawl rotatable about a pivot axis between an engaged position and a disengaged position. The pawl is adapted to engage the ring gear when in the engaged position for preventing movement of the ring gear. The locking assembly further includes an actuator selectively actuated to move the pawl to the engaged position. Additionally, the locking assembly includes a biasing mechanism engaging the pawl to continuously bias the pawl toward the disengaged position. The pawl includes a first tooth and a second tooth spaced from each other to define a gap therebetween. The first tooth and the second tooth are adapted to trap a tooth of the ring gear in the gap when the pawl is in the engaged position for preventing rotation of the ring gear.

Abstract: A brake mechanism for a hybrid transmission includes a magnetic unit and a brake plate. The magnetic unit is configured to selectively generate magnetic flux. The magnetic unit radially surrounds an axis of rotation. The magnetic unit defines a plurality of grooves. The brake plate radially surrounds the axis of rotation and includes a plurality of teeth. The brake plate is movable axially along the axis of rotation between a disengaged position and an engaged position. The brake plate is configured to rotate about the axis of rotation, relative to the magnetic unit when in the disengaged position. The teeth of the brake plate are configured to engage the corresponding grooves of the magnetic unit when in the engaged position in response to generation of magnetic flux by the magnetic unit, such that rotation of the brake plate is ceased.

Abstract: A vehicle's electrified powertrain includes a battery pack linked to a traction power inverter module (TPIM) converting DC voltage from the battery pack into AC voltage. A rotary electric machine includes a stator energized by the TPIM's AC voltage, enclosing a rotor core capable of rotation. The rotor core contains slots holding conductive bars and permanent magnets, with conductive bars positioned closer to the rotor core's center. The conductive bars and permanent magnets are separated by gaps within each slot. An annular end ring assembly is present at one end of the rotor core, featuring terminal conductors connected to subsets of conductive bars and a secondary coil of a rotary transformer. When the stator is energized, the rotor shaft, connected to the rotor, rotates. The electric machine powers a transmission, which is coupled to the rotor shaft.

Abstract: A permanent magnet electric machine (PM machine) for a vehicle or other system includes a rotor assembly, fixed permanent magnets, a stator, an actuator, and one or more repositionable/moveable flux-shunting elements. The flux-shunting element is repositioned to control flux at specific operating points of the PM machine. The rotor assembly has a rotor coaxially surrounding and coupled to a rotor shaft. The permanent magnets are mounted to or in the rotor, and the moveable flux-shunting element is positioned between the rotor shaft and a respective one of the permanent magnets. Inboard and outboard ends of each respective permanent magnet may be oriented toward the rotor shaft and stator, respectively. The actuator selectively positions the moveable flux-shunting element at one or more operating points of the PM machine to vary reluctance in a magnetic circuit formed by the stator and rotor assembly.

Abstract: A permanent magnet electric machine (PM machine) includes a rotor with rotatable magnets and a stator defining an air gap with the rotor. An actuator rotates the rotatable magnets at predetermined operating points through an angular distance sufficient for changing magnetic pole orientations of the rotatable magnets, and thus modifies magnetic flux linkage with stator windings across the air gap. Fixed magnets may be arranged around a circumference of the rotor. The actuator may be actively or passively driven. Flux-shunting elements are optionally disposed in the rotor to further modify the flux linkage. A gear set connected to torque transfer elements may be driven by the actuator to rotate the rotatable magnets. A vehicle includes drive wheels, a transmission, and the PM machine. A method controls magnetic flux linkage in the PM machine noted above.
