    摘要: The present invention is directed to a retarder control system for protection against transmission overspeed. The system operates in conjunction with a rotatable input member and an output member that is rotatable relative to the input member. A torque transfer device is operatively connected between the relatively rotatable input and output members. Specifically, a piston assembly is operated by an input control chamber that selectively receives pressurized hydraulic fluid which effects translation of the piston assembly to actuate the torque transfer device and thereby effect a driving connection between the relatively rotatable input and output members. The present system is adapted to control a hydrodynamic retarder assembly having a work cavity to receive hydraulic fluid. The retarder input valve assembly is supported from one of the relatively rotatable members selectively to deliver pressurized hydraulic fluid from the input control chamber to the retarder cavity. In order to achieve overspeed protection the retarder input valve opens in response to a predetermined angular velocity of the relatively rotatable member on which the retarder input valve assembly is supported. In a variation of the retarder control system explained above, a dump valve assembly is provided which opens selectively to release pressurized hydraulic fluid from the work cavity of said retarder in response to the pressure of the hydraulic fluid within said retarder work cavity.

    摘要: A retarder control embodying the concepts of the present invention utilizes a spool valve having a spool valve member axially translatable between an on- and an off-position. A spring is employed to bias the spool valve member toward its off-position. A torque converter, a cooler and a retarder each have an input and an output that are ported through the spool valve. The retarder is selectively ported to a hydraulic return through the spool valve, and a modulating solenoid may be employed to feed pressurized hydraulic fluid against the spool valve member not only to move the spool valve member against the spring toward its on-position but also to regulate the axial translation of the spool valve member in order to control the pressure at the retarder discharge that is also ported through the spool valve. A cooler communicates directly with the converter when the spool valve member is in its off-position. To the contrary, the cooler communicates directly with the retarder when the spool valve member is in the on-position. First and a second reaction sub-chambers are disposed in opposition against the spool valve member. A spring is received within the first reaction sub-chamber. A modulating solenoid effects continuous communication of pressurized hydraulic fluid to the second reaction sub-chamber when the spool valve member in its on-position, and a conduit selectively communicates pressurized hydraulic fluid to the first reaction chamber.

    摘要: A method and apparatus for increased clutch capacity in an automatic vehicle transmission having a nested clutch pair. An electronic control unit controls a pulse width modulator which applies control signals to the actuating solenoid valves of the nested pair of clutches. The electronic control unit operates to reduce the pressure on an engaged clutch of the pair during the period of time that the other clutch is being actuated during the shift. Once the shift is completed, the operating pressure on the previously engaged clutch is restored to a normal operating pressure. Provisions are also made for assuring that the period of time required for the shift is maintained between threshold limits or within a window of time. This adaptive feature precludes excessively short or long shifts.

    摘要: A regulator valve assembly adapted to be used in conjunction with a torque converter in a vehicular transmission having a pressurized hydraulic distribution system, a cooling system and a torque converter. The regulator valve assembly has a stepped valve chamber to receive a spool valve member for axial translation. The spool valve member defines first, second, third and fourth subchambers within the stepped valve chamber. Axial translation of the valve member effects selective communication between the subchambers. A first land on the spool valve member is interposed between the first and second subchambers. A second land is interposed between the second and third subchambers. A third land is interposed between the third and fourth subchambers, and a fourth land is exposed to the fourth subchamber. A first outlet communicates with the first subchamber. A first inlet and a second outlet communicate with the second subchamber. A second inlet and third outlet communicate with the third subchamber. A third inlet port communicates with the fourth subchamber. The first land exposes a projected area to the second subchamber that is less than the projected area that the second land exposes to the second subchamber. Translation of the spool valve member controls communication between the second and third subchambers as well as between the second and third subchambers. A spring biases the spool valve member in a direction to preclude communication between the first and second subchambers.

At least one friction engagement device is fluidly coupled to a first pump, and a lubrication and cooling sub-system is normally fluidly coupled to a second pump. Illustratively, when a flow rate of the fluid in the first fluid passageway is less than a threshold fluid flow rate, a temperature of the fluid is greater than a temperature threshold and a fluid flow demand is greater than a fluid flow demand threshold, fluid flow from the second pump to the lubrication and cooling sub-system is blocked and fluid supplied by the second pump is instead directed to the at least one friction engagement device such that fluid is supplied by both the first and second pumps only to the at least one friction engagement device.
