Abstract: A reaction differential is disclosed which is preferably used in a hydrostatic steering differential for accurately steering a casemate vehicle at very low speeds for precise aiming of a gun which is aimed in azimuth by steering. The reaction differential is driven in selected direction by a hydrostatic motor only after the motor is rotated at an rpm which will provide smooth motor performance before sufficient torque is provided to initiate steering of the vehicle.

Abstract: A power train having an engine, a retarder and a transmission and controls to manually control the retarder and an engine overspeed responsive control operative to shorten a link in the manual control to move the retarder control valve to automatically apply the retarder in response to engine overspeed. An air cylinder in a link of the retarder apply linkage is actuated by vehicle air brake pressure controlled by a transmission input or engine speed governor to apply the retarder and prevent engine speed above a predetermined value and thus limit vehicle speed. When the retarder apply air cylinder shortens the link, the retarder apply pedal engages the brake off stop to provide the reaction to move the retarder valve.

Abstract: A hydraulic brake supplied by water which circulates successively through a pump and a radiator forming an expansion vessel, and a purging pipe being provided between the center of the brake and the top of said vessel. A control device responsive to the pressure existing at a point in the water system and situated downstream of the brake. The device controls a value which automatically closes the purging pipe during the working phases of the brake and opens the pipe on the placing in and out of service of the brake. The brake is particularly advantageous for rapid passenger vehicles.

Abstract: A transmission having a torque converter, hydrodynamic retarder and control system. A regulated pressure source is connected in series through the torque converter, a cooler which restricts flow to the cooler outlet line with the retarder on off valve in either position. The cooler outlet line is regulated at a low pressure and excess fluid flow exhausted to a sump by the converter pressure regulator valve. The retarder on off valve in retarder off position directly exhausts the retarder outlet and blocks the retarder inlet so all cooler outlet flow is connected by the converter regulator valve to sump and in retarder on position connects retarder outlet to join converter outlet flow to the cooler and the cooler outlet to retarder inlet. A retarder regulator valve regulates retarder inlet pressure between a minimum and maximum valve limited by the converter pressure regulator valve and increasing as a function of retarder demand and decreasing as a function of the maximum rate of increase of retarder outlet pressure, for manual control of retarder torque varying as a similar function of retarder speed with increased retarder demand. A torque limiter valve limits retarder outlet pressure and torque. A manually operated electric control simultaneously controls the retarder on off valve and the retarder regulator valve on movement from an off position through a range of on positions to place the retarder on off valve in on position and to manually increase the pressure regulated by the retarder regulator valve.
