摘要:
An apparatus for and method of steam treatment of fodder, for example animal fodder which is typically in baled form. The purpose of steam treating is to kill mesophilic and thermophilic mould spores that are either attached to the fodder or detach when disturbed and become airborne. These airborne particles are associated with respiratory problems, infections and allergies to livestock as well as humans. The apparatus for steam treating fodder comprises at least one steam distribution manifold, which has a plurality of lances adapted to penetrate a bale of fodder so that steam is supplied to the interior volume of the fodder.

A method for treating silage to enhance aerobic stability by inhibiting growth of microorganisms selected from yeasts, molds and spore-forming bacteria is disclosed. The method comprises treating silage or feed with a composition comprising Lactobacillus buchneri, LN1297, or the antimicrobial components produced thereby. The strain of Lactobacillus buchneri disclosed in the invention has been purified and isolated and has been found to be nontoxic, safe and able to improve aerobic stability of silage.

A method for preserving animal feed involves treating the animal feed with an inorganic acid having a pK.sub.a from 1.0 to 5.0 to reduce the pH of the animal feed to less than 4.5. Sodium bisulfate is a preferred inorganic acid. Preferably, the acid is substantially completely dissolved and is substantially uniformly distributed throughout the animal feed. In a preferred method, the animal feed is treated by mixing the animal feed with a dry acid and applying steam to the mixture. An animal feed composition contains a feed grain and an inorganic acid having a pK.sub.a from 1.0 to 5.0, where the acid is present in an amount sufficient to reduce the pH of the animal feed to less than 4.5.

The new invention proposes a new method and an apparatus for the preparation of cereal for milling. Before conditioning, the grain is cleaned in a first dry stage and a second moist or wet stage, and the main quantity of water is added before or during the second stage, the grain for the moist or wet cleaning being in intermediate storage for 1 to 120 minutes. Preferably a continuously operating scouring machine is used for the dry cleaning as well as for the moist or wet cleaning, the grain being forcibly conveyed from the inlet to the outlet by conveying means and processed by areas of noses arranged alternately with the conveying means, and the material abraded by the scouring is repeatedly separated out with the rotational movement of the rotor.

Process and generator for generating a pesticidal gas mixture of phosphine gas and air for fumigating an enclosed environment, e.g. a grain silo with phosphine. Air, moisture content adjusted by drying or humidifying, is passed through a porous bed of aluminum phosphide or magnesium phosphide, preferably in a throw-a-way cartridge. The resulting mixture of air and phosphine gas is passed into the space. Typical humidities (which determines the phosphine concentration) are 4 g/m.sup.3 for "flow through" conditions or 12 g/m.sup.3 for "one shot" conditions of fumigation. The cartridge is fitted directly in sealing relationship between inlet and outlet adaptors to serve as the gas generator vessel of the apparatus. The cartridge, completely filled with metal phosphide in powder or granulate form, has cylindrical gas-tight side walls, flexible and stretchable to allow for expansion of the metal phosphide during hydrolysis, and porous end walls.

A process for conditioning and compacting vegetable fodder prior to storage and shipment which comprises breaking standard-sized bales and adjusting the moisture level of the fodder to reduce pulverization during subsequent compacting and handling; while at the same time injecting mold inhibitors and nutritional additive before repackaging the fodder into more compact bales for shipment.
