    Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention include a compression system including one or more compressibility inputs; a compression predictor configured to predict the compressibility of data based on the one or more compressibility inputs; a compressor configured to compress the data; and one or more compression inputs. At least one of the compression predictor or the compressor is configured to determine how to compress the data based on the one or more compression inputs. The one or more compressibility inputs comprise at least one of an object extension dictionary, an object signature dictionary, and an entropy estimation algorithm library. The one or more compression inputs comprise at least one of a quality of service profile, a device performance profile and a compression algorithm performance chart.

    Abstract: Techniques for performing data deduplication and compression in data storage systems. Data deduplication is performed in a deduplication domain on a segment-by-segment basis to obtain a plurality of deduplicated data segments. Deduplicated data segments are grouped together to form a plurality of compression groups. Data compression is performed on each compression group, and the compressed group is stored on spinning media. By performing data deduplication on a segment-by-segment basis, the size of each segment can be reduced to increase the effectiveness of data deduplication. By performing data compression on compression groups, the size of each compression domain can be increased to increase the effectiveness of data compression. By storing deduplicated data segments as a compressed group on the spinning media, a sequential nature of the segments can be preserved to reduce a seek time/rotational latency of the spinning media and a number of IOPS handled by the data storage system.

    Abstract: An improved mixed oscillator-and-external excitation model and methods for estimating the model parameters, for evaluating model quality, and for combining it with known in the art methods are disclosed. The improvement over existing oscillators allows the model to receive, as an input, all except the most recent point in the acquired data. Model stability is achieved through a process which includes restoring unavailable to the decoder data from the optimal model parameters and by using metrics to select a stable restored model output. The present invention is effective for very low bit-rate coding/compression and decoding/decompression of digital signals, including digitized speech, audio, and image data, and for analysis, detection, and classification of signals. Operations can be performed in real time, and parameterization can be achieved at a user-specified level of compression.

    Abstract: A specifying unit specifies one or more dividing positions in input data. A common region compressing unit specifies compression positions in the input data corresponding to positions at which sizes from two ends of compressed, data are equal to or larger than a predetermined, size and corresponding to positions which sandwich adjacently-positioned dividing positions and of which a size therebetween is equal to or larger than the predetermined size and compresses former compression data that are arranged in a row in the input data on either side of each of the dividing positions and that are interposed between the compression positions. An individual region compressing unit compresses latter compression data that are separated fay any of the pieces of former compression data in the input data, based on the former compression data positioned adjacent to the piece of latter compression data and the piece of latter compression data.
