In a method and a device for installing, in a rock wall or roof, a self-drilling expandable rock bolt (2) having a drill bit portion (5), an expansion portion (9) and a connecting portion (10), in a rock breaking step, the self-drilling rock bolt (2) is provided with a rock breaking movement and flushing fluid for producing a bore hole, and in an expansion step, pressurized expansion fluid is introduced into the expansion portion (9) in order to expand it so as to be fixed to the inside of the bore hole. Expansion fluid is introduced by means of a swiveling device (6) so that the rock bolt (2) is free to move during the rock breaking step, and be tightened against the rock bolt (2) in the expansion step in such a way that a sealed channel for expansion fluid is established between an expansion fluid source and the expansion portion (9). The invention also concerns a self-drilling rock bolt.

A single-pass roof bolt adapted to drill and to be secured in a bore in the roof of a mine for supporting the roof comprising a tubular body open at one end thereof, constituting the inner end of the bolt, and a cutting structure at the opposite end of the tubular body, constituting the outer end of the bolt. The bolt is adapted to drill a bore in the mine roof upon rotation of the bolt, with the cutting structure being wider than the tubular body for forming an annulus between the tubular body and the wall of the bore. The bolt has a head at its inner end to facilitate rotation of the bolt, and to bear against the mine proof in pressurized relationship. The tubular body further has a transfer port at its outer end, and is free of flow obstructions between its ends, whereby during drilling air is flowable through the bolt for removing cuttings from the bore, and upon completion of drilling grouting material from a source external to the roof bolt may be delivered to the annulus via the transfer port for securing the bolt in the bore. A roof bolting system including a machine for rotating, applying force and delivering the grouting material to the bolt to install it is also disclosed. In addition, a method of installing the bolt is disclosed.

An anchor rod for insertion in a fastening matrix such as a concrete structural element, by means of a hand-held percussion drill, has a smooth mid-section of slightly reduced diameter just below a slightly thickened intermediate collar that separates it from threading at the external end of the rod and has a profiled ridge and groove section at its insertion end which has a lefthand twist for insertion with a righthand rotation, as well as a frustoconical flat tip. The profiled section increases in diameter gradually towards the tip. At least the profiled section is manufactured by cold deformation with flat ridge tops having minutely burred or beaded edges. The method of setting involves the use of a mortar, preferably a synthetic resin two-component mortar, and there are added, either separately or in one of the mortar components, abrasive particles such as quartz sand grains, of a grain size suited to the size of the grooves in the profiled portion of the rod, so that during insertion of the rod in a pre-bore drilled with a drill of a diameter corresponding to the maximum diameter of the anchor rods, an undercutting type of abrasive effect will widen the bore progressively towards the end thereof, this being assisted by an inherent eccentric movement of the rod as it is rotated and chews into the mortar, breaking up in most cases the fragile capsules in which the components are provided to provide further abrasion. The smooth shaft portion between the intermediate collar and the profiled insertion end of the rod may be provided with a release coating to reduce or prevent bonding with the mortar in order to allow stretching this portion of the rod under stress and providing the effect of an expansion bolt, if such an effect is desired. The bonding effect in any case is at a maximum at the inner end of the bore.
