A portable apparatus for shaping glass by abrasion utilizes a pneumatic motor carried by a carriage which travels along a track. A glass cutting abrasive blade is driven by a pneumatic motor and a fluid coolant spray, which coolant may be water, is directed to the abrading surface of the blade where it contacts the glass being shaped. Various shaping blades may be utilized for cutting, bevel edging, pencil edging and the like.

The invention is in a process, and the apparatus, for path control of a processing tool of a grinding machine for an all-around edge grinding of a glass pane. A cross sled supports the processing tool for movement in an X-Y coordinate system wherein the path of movement of the cross sled is controlled by a program. The path control, however, is critically controlled by the use of a scanning instrumentality including a scanning organ which scans the edge of the glass pane along a path of movement in front of the processing tool. The scanning organ is supported by an arm articulated about the axis of the processing tool. The scanning organ leads the processing tool by a set distance, equal to the length of the arm, and determines the values for the X- and the Y-coordinates. The values that are developed by the scanning organ are stored in a sliding register having an input from each of the two axes. A signal developed by the sliding register is used for the control of the X-Y adjusting motors provided for moving the cross sled.

An apparatus for beveling a marginal edge of a sheet of glass which includes a table having a top opening in which a support plate for the glass sheet to be bevelled is disposed with a grinding wheel mounted on the table over the support plate, the grinding wheel being fixed to a shaft drivably connected by a belt to a drive motor on the table and the shaft being rotatably mounted in bearings supported on an adjustment device mounted on the table by means of which the horizontal, vertical and angular positions of the shaft and therefore the grinding wheel may be set together with a guide on a support plate which the marginal edge of the glass sheet to be bevelled engages as the glass sheet is moved slidably on the support plate with the glass sheet marginal edge in grinding engagement with the peripheral edge of the grinding wheel.

An apparatus for beveling the edges of glass including a base, an exterior case mounted on the base containing a pair of electrical motors, the motors respectively rotating a pair of beveling spindles which extend an adjustable distance through a pair of apertures in the top surface of the case so as to contact and bevel the glass. Mounted above the base at the back exterior of the case is a further electrical motor for directly driving two rotating wheels, a lustering wheel and a polishing wheel. The case further contains a fluid reservoir and tubes for delivering water or wetting agent to the surface of the beveling spindles and switching and electrical circuitry for controlling the three electrical motors and fluid delivery system.

AN IMPROVED GLASS EDGE GRINDING MACHINE INCLUDES THE FOLLOWING STRUCTURE. A FIRST GRINDING ELEMENT AND A SECOND GRINDING ELEMENT ARE MOUNTED ON A ROTATABLE SPINDLE AND THE ELEMENTS HAVE EXPOSED CIRCUMFERENTIAL SURFACES FOR CONTACTING OPPOSED CORNERS OF AN EDGE OF A GLASS SHEET. THE GRINDING ELEMENTS ARE MOUNTED ABOUT AN EXIS OF THE SPINDLE IN A SPACED RELATIONSHIP SUCH THAT THE EXPOSED CIRCUMFERENTIAL SURFACE OF EACH ELEMENT PRESENTS A CONTINUOUS GRINDING SURFACE FOR ONE OF THE CORNERS OF THE EDGE OF THE GLASS SHEET. A POSITIONING DEVICE IS LOCATED IN THE SPACE BETWEEN THE GRINDING ELEMENTS. THE POSITIONING DEVICE ENGAGES THE CENTRAL PORTION OF THE EDGE OF THE GLASS SHEET PLACED BETWEEN THE GRINDING ELEMENTS TO POSITION THE CORNERS OF THE GLASS SHEET WITH RESPECT TO THE GRINDING ELEMENTS. IN SUCH A MANNER, THE GRINDING ELEMENTS ACCURATELY GRIND THE CORNERS OF THE GLASS SHEET AND REMOVES THE PROPER AMOUNT OF STOCK THEREFROM.
