    摘要: This invention concerns an active reconfigurable stretch forming tool, and in another aspect the invention is a method of stretch forming. The tool comprises an array of extensible shape forming elements which are driven in extension to produce the same force per unit area across a workpiece during shape forming. An array of limit switches are located in front of the array of shape forming elements, such that each shape forming element is driven in extension towards a respective limit switch during shape forming. In use, each limit switch is activated by the workpiece as it is shaped and each switch, upon activation, prevents further extension of the respective driven element. The tool and method are useful in the forming of three dimensional shapes in solid sheet metal or mesh, to produce panels for reflector antennas.

    摘要: A thin sheet is formed into a surface having compound curvature by vacuum forming the sheet against an array of support posts which have been adjusted to define the locus of the desired surface. A rigid frame is placed on the exposed back surface of the sheet and bonded thereto while the vacuum formed shape is maintained. Alternatively, a frame of beam members kerfed to make them compliant is placed on the back surface and bonded to the sheet which restores the structural integrity of the beams by briding the kerfs.

    摘要: A method for making a metal stamping die suitable for use in forming sheet metal reflectors for photographic use. The structure of the metal stamping die is made in the manner of the method to compensate for spring-back characteristics of a material used to form a reflector by first constructing a test die which has a predetermined shape related to the desired reflector shape. A comparison is then made between a test workpiece made with the test die and the desired reflector shape to determine the die shape that produces a corresponding portion of the reflector shape. Finally, another die is constructed by shaping it in accordance with the comparison to obtain a final die shape that will acceptably produce the desired reflector shape.

A magnetic field is repetitively produced, the field being of a size for forming the workpiece in a subregion which is substantially smaller than the total region to be formed. The workpiece and the means producing the magnetic field are displaced relatively an amount which provides full coverage of the total region to be formed after a series of repetitions of the magnetic field.
