Molded articles prepared from compositions comprising carbon black have been found to exhibit reduced splay when compared to the corresponding compositions without carbon black. Also provided is a method of reducing splay in a molded article.

A composition comprises an impact modifier and a compatibilized blend of a poly(arylene ether) and an aliphatic-aromatic polyamide. The polyamide is composed of dicarboxylic acid units comprising 60 to 100 mol % of terephthalic acid units and diamine units comprising 60 to 100 mol % of 1,9-nonanediamine units and/or 2-methyl-1,8-octanediamine units. The polyamide has an amine end group content greater than 45 micromoles per gram of polyamide.

Functionalized polyphenylene ether compositions are provided which are particularly useful for effecting compatibility for a blend of polyphenylene ether resin and a polyamide resin. The functionalized-polyphenylene ether is the reaction product of a polyphenylene ether polymer and a compound having the general formula (i)--Z--(ii), wherein group (i) is a polyphenylene ether-philic moiety such as acyl chloride, group (ii) is a polyamide-philic moiety such as dicarboxylic acid anhydride, and Z is a divalent hydrocarbon radical providing a covalent linkage between groups (i) and (ii). An example of the compound having general formula (i)--Z--(ii) is trimellitic anhydride acid chloride.

Novel polyphenylene ether compositions having good chemical resistance, tensile and impact properties are injection moldable without delamination near the gate. The preferred compositions comprise a polyphenylene ether, a high impact polystyrene, a styrene-ethylene/butylene-styrene copolymer, a poly(ethylene-co-methacrylic acid) and a poly(styrene-co-glycidyl methacrylate), and optionally polyethylene.

Blends of (A) an impact resistant interpolymer comprising crosslinked acrylic or methacrylic rubber, crosslinked styrene-acrylonitrile and uncrosslinked styrene-acrylonitrile polymer components, (B) an acrylic polymer, and (C) a multistage grafted acrylic elastomer are disclosed. The blends display a good combination of physical properties including gloss, impact strength and tensile properties.

Novel polyphenylene ether-polyamide compositions having improved compatibility, elongation and impact properties as well as improved processability are prepared comprising a polyphenylene ether, a polyamide and a property improving amount of an acyl modified polyphenylene ether compatibilization agent. These compositions may further comprise alkenyl aromatic polymer or a rubbery polymer.

A polyamide-poly(arylene ether) composition is prepared by melt blending specific amounts of components including a polyamide, a poly(arylene ether), a hydrogenated block copolymer of an alkenyl aromatic monomer and a conjugated diene, a compatibilizing agent, and partially saponified ester of a C16-C36 aliphatic carboxylic acid and a C2-C12 aliphatic alcohol. The composition is useful for molding articles that have a significantly reduced incidence of the cosmetic defect known as “silver streaks”.

A composition is prepared by melt blending specific amounts of a polyamide, a flame retardant that includes brominated polystyrene, a polymeric flame retardant synergist, and a compatibilizing agent. The polymeric flame retardant synergist can be a poly(arylene ether), a poly(arylene ether)-polysiloxane block copolymer, or a mixture thereof The composition is useful for molding automotive and electrical parts.
