    摘要: A dimensional weighing apparatus is disclosed which has a weighing scale for determining the actual weight of a carton placed thereon, and associated therewith is a measuring frame and an optical sensing system for measuring the linear distance of the three axes of carton positioned on the scale necessary to determine the volume of the carton. A computer processing means determines firstly whether the actual volume of the carton is less or greater than a predetermined threshold volume, and if greater, calculates a dimensional weight of the carton and compares the dimensional weight of the carton with the actual weight to determine which weight is the larger, and sends a signal indicative of the larger weight to a shipping system which determines an appropriate shipping charge for the carton based on the weight determined by the dimensional weighing apparatus to be the larger of the two weights.

    摘要: The invention is a method and apparatus for measuring the dimensions of a parcel. The invention begins by placing a parcel in the corner of a field of measurement upon a flat surface and against two adjacent walls. At the base of each wall, and along the angle where the adjacent walls meet, is a calibrated reflective strip. The calibration marks on each of the reflective strips are of known size and spacing. One or more sensors are activated and read the number of visible calibrated marks. The one or more sensors transmits this data to a processor which calculates the measurement for the length, width, and height of the parcel by subtracting the observed visible calibration marks from the number of possible calibration marks. If the flat surface, upon which the parcel has been placed is the weighing surface of a scale, then weight for the parcel can be determined. Each of the then calculated dimensions (length, width, height, and weight) can then be displayed and/or transmitted to a parcel processing system. Alternatively, the flat surface upon which the parcel is to be placed would require only one adjoining wall. Calibration marks are placed directly upon the flat surface and upon the one adjoining wall. The calibration marks on the flat surface appear as lines forming a chevron pattern progressing outwardly from a surface corner. The calibration marks on the adjoining wall are placed upon the wall from bottom to top.

    摘要: The invention is a method for measuring the dimensions of a parcel through point determination which is initiated by placing a parcel on a weighing scale within a field of measurement which comprises a first known spatial relationship. In a preferred embodiment, an ultrasonic emitter is positioned at the outermost corner of the parcel. A sensor is placed on a line along each of the three axes ending at the outermost corner of the parcel; the lines representing the length, width, and height of the parcel and comprising the second known spatial relationship. The emitter transmits a pulse to the sensors. Each of the lines is then measured by determining a length of time from emission of the pulse to reception of the pulse by the sensors. The measurement data is transmitted to a data processing system which converts the time length of the pulse into a distance; a three dimensional graphical representation of the parcel, as determined by the first and second known spatial relationships, can then be displayed together with the calculated weight of the parcel. The calculated dimensions can then be transmitted to a parcel processing system. In an alternative embodiment, data points are determined by positioning an electronic pointer with respect to the parcel. Points are marked on the parcel with the pointer and are transmitted to the data processing system. A position for each of the points is recorded and plotted and the dimensions of the parcel can then be calculated and processed.

    摘要: The invention is a method and apparatus for measuring the dimensions of a parcel. The method comprises a series of steps utilizing the apparatus for determining each of the relevant dimensions of the parcel. The steps begin with the placing of a parcel on a flat surface in a field of measurement; the flat surface can be the weighing surface of a scale for calculating the parcel weight. A laser scanner is positioned and then rotated within its position so as to locate the lead and trail edges of the parcel, the left and right sides, and the top and bottom edges. The positioning data is then transmitted to a data processor which calculates the length, width, and height of the parcel. A conveyor belt for transporting the parcel to the measurement field can be utilized. A laser beam is transmitted toward a mirror so that the parcel must pass the mirror while the parcel is on the conveyor belt. The mirror is further positioned so that the laser beam is deflected toward an encoder bar located on the surface of the conveyor belt. During the transmission of the laser beam, a count is established which corresponds to a predetermined measurement scale. The count is continued until the transmission of the laser beam to the encoder bar is broken by passage of the parcel across the laser beam; the count continues when the beam is no longer blocked. The length and height of the parcel can then be determined.

The voice recognition subsystem is trained to recognize various operator words and generate appropriate signals for postage value determination, e.g. zone information, zip code information, and rate classifications, as well as command signals. The system processor receives such signals from either the voice recognition subsystem or the keyboard.

    摘要: Automatic postage value computing for individually selected services is described using a replaceable individualized directory memory and a replaceable rate chart memory suitable with all directory memories. Memories are provided with pseudo rate charts that resemble conventional rate charts but serve to either grant or deny access to a rate chart depending upon the user's selection. The use of pseudo rate charts permits an unbundling of the postage value computation services to serve the user's needs, without requiring program changes. With individualized directory memory rate selection the updating of user rate chart memories is limited to those rates he has selected. Several embodiments are described.

    摘要: An automated mailing system includes a postage value determining system processor, a scale for providing weight indicative signals, a keyboard for operator entry of information relating to a determination of postage, and a plurality of peripheral devices. A peripheral controller interface establishes communications links with the peripheral devices. An incompatible systems interface interconnects a serial communications bus of the system processor and the peripheral controller interface. The incompatible systems interface includes a processor programmed to receive, decode and transmit information from or to the system processor along the serial bus and load or receive information from or to the peripheral controller interface along parallel lines. The communication timing constraints of the serial communications bus for receipt of data signals by the system processor do not permit monitoring of the data transmission by the incompatible systems processor. To accommodate for such timing constraints, system clock pulses of the serial bus are employed at a flip-flop to disable the incompatible systems processor.

    摘要: A processor controlled automated mailing system for determining and printing the requisite postage for mailing an article includes a scale, a keyboard for operator input, a display and a meter setting device. After the requisite postage has been determined, a postage printing cycle is initiated by the operator. The processor determines whether the calculated postage value exceeds the digit printing capacity of the meter and, if so, advises the operator. The operator then determines if an entry error has been made and if not, reactivates the printing cycle. The processor thereafter initiates the meter setting device to sequentially print multiple tapes with each depression of the print key until the total value printed reaches the calculated postage value. An alternate embodiment incorporates a circuit for implementation of the method without processor control.

    摘要: A multiprocessor parcel postage metering system includes a system processor to which a scale subsystem processor, a postage printing subsystem processor, and a peripherals subsystem processor may be connected. The processors share a common data bus over which data is transferred serially. The system processor accepts weight and status data transmitted from the scale subsystem processor over the serial data bus. The system processor operates on this data and keyboard entry data to calculate required postage as a function of parcel origin, parcel destination, class of service and selected special fees. Printer setting data is transferred to the postage printing subsystem processor over the serial data bus. Peripheral devices, such as a document printer or a parcel identification number counter, are controlled by data sent to the peripherals subsystem processor over the serial data bus. Each transmission is verified by returning the complemented form of a transmitted word to the sending processor. The sending processor compares the transmitted word with the returned word and sends out the next word only if a match is found.

Upon processor recognition of a particular entry or other errors an assigned error signal is generated which blocks the operand or operation result signal from the display units. In one embodiment the error signal is received at a programable logic array associated with each display unit to provide a signal for accessing a memory which in turn provides the appropriate letter pattern signal for the display unit to spell out an error prompt message. An alternate embodiment provides for serial generation of the letter pattern signals for each display unit and rapid sequential actuation of the display units to spell the prompt message.
