    Abstract: When blow molding elongated serpentine tubes or similar articles, loading of the mold cavity with the parison can present a problem. The parison can stick against the wall of the mold cavity. Moreover, a large diameter parison must be used, i.e. the parison must have a diameter equal to the total width dimension of the article, and consequently a large volume of flash is produced. The flash must be trimmed and recycled. In order to avoid these problems, inserts are placed in the mold to define portions of the mold cavity, particulary at corners. Air under pressure is fed into passages in the outer surfaces of the inserts and discharged through small orifices in such inserts against the parison to guide and drive the latter fully into the mold cavity. A vacuum can also be applied to the end of the cavity remote from the parison entry point for drawing the parison into the mold.

    Abstract: A method for making a plastic/metal composite part comprises providing a tubular metallic preform and coating the metallic preform with an outer plastic layer to form a laminated preform. The laminated preform may be formed to create a laminated structural component. The forming may involve hydroforming. The plastic/metal composite part also has at least one secondary plastic component. The secondary plastic component may be plastic welded to the laminated structural component with a plastic to plastic bond or weld. This method is useful for making conduits such as fuel filler conduits which may have a metallic inner wall and an outer plastic wall with mounting clips being plastic welded to the outer plastic wall.

    Abstract: In order to attach a fuel system component such as a pipe nipple to a fuel tank having a polyethylene outer layer, the fuel system component is made from a first material which may have desirable characteristics such as resistance to creep, but which may not be easily weldable to the polyethylene outer layer of the tank. The flange member is used for attachment to the body portion of the fuel system component by welding and for attachment to the polyethylene layer of the tank. To inhibit hydrocarbon vapour flow-through through the flange member, the flange member includes a barrier layer which extends from one side of the flange to the other and which surrounds the central aperture. In another embodiment of the invention, the flange member is made from a material which has the necessary barrier properties.

    Abstract: Fuel system components for vehicles may be made from polyethylene components which are typically blow molded. To inhibit fuel vapour permeation, the polyethylene is often co-extruded into a parison with the parison comprising a barrier layer. Upon trimming flash or in the mold closure itself, the barrier layer may be ruptured. Sealing of areas of discontinuity in the fuel system component to inhibit hydrocarbon vapour pass through is achieved by sealing the area of barrier discontinuity with a sealing bead which has the necessary barrier properties. The barrier properties may be inherent in the sealing bead material or in a barrier layer extruded into the sealing bead.

    Abstract: An automotive boot for use with a connection such as a constant velocity joint includes a separate boot and a separate bushing. The bushing has an internal configuration which is tri-lobed to contact the surface of one of the mechanical components encapsulated by the boot. The internal surface of the skirt of the boot and the corresponding external surface of the bushing each contain interlocking components, preferentially these are ribs and corresponding grooves.
