Abstract:
An electrophoretic fluid damper in which cooperable electrodes are slidably disposed one within the other and are connected respectively to relatively movable members. An electrophoretic fluid capable of separating into particle-rich and particle-deficient phases by electrophoresis operates in surface contact with the electrodes. An electrically nonconductive material having raised surface areas and spaces between the surface areas is associated with one of the electrodes. When a voltage is applied between the electrodes in a first direction, the particle-rich phase of the fluid collects on one of the electrodes and also makes contact with the spaces and the raised surface areas of the material associated with the other electrode thereby engaging or locking the electrodes together and transmitting force between the members. When the voltage potential is applied in the opposite direction, the particle-rich phase migrates to the other electrode and collects in the spaces between the raised surfaces of the material, thereby disengaging the electrodes and reducing the transmission of force between the elements. The apparatus may be configured as a shock absorber or linear brake.
Abstract:
An apparatus for controlling the transmission of torque between drive elements using an electroactive fluid which is sealed within an enclosed chamber. A housing defines the chamber and includes at least one end defining an opening. Spaced electrodes are provided in the chamber in contact with the fluid and are respectively connected to the drive elements. A controllable power source applies a variable electric field to the fluid such that force is transmitted between the electrodes by the fluid according to the strength of the field. A shaft connects one of the electrodes to one of the elements and extends through the opening. A ferrofluid seal assembly prevents leakage of the fluid from the chamber through the opening. The assembly defines with the shaft an annular space in communication with the fluid. A magnetic circuit is provided in the assembly by a permanent magnet for applying a concentrated magnetic field in one or more regions across the annular space. A ferrofluid which is immiscible with the electroactive fluid occupies the regions as though it were a liquid O-ring, thus sealing the fluid within the chamber both when the shaft is stationary and when rotating.
Abstract:
Controllable electrorheological fluid composite structure elements incorporate electrorheological fluids as a structural component between opposing fluid containment layers to form at least a portion of any variety of extended mechanical systems such as plates, panels, beams and bars or structures including these elements. The electrorheological fluid is operatively contained in a region between the containment layers and has complex shear and tensile modulus properties which vary with the electric field applied thereto. A variable power source is utilized to create an electric potential between the layers of the structure element to create the electric field. An alternative power source may include the use of a piezoelectric material layer. In order to maintain the insulation and spacing between the containment layers, a fabric or separating layer having an open mesh is provided which permits the transportation of electrorheological fluid in the region between the layers. Multiple layers and regions are contemplated including orientation orthogonally to the long axis of the structure to take advantage of the elongational modulus of the fluid. The composite structures of the present invention may be incorporated in a wide variety of mechanical systems for control of vibration and other properties.
Abstract:
A pair of rearwardly extending hooks are arranged to engage respective shoulders of a cameraman, and these hooks support a carrier body portion defining a top opening pocket for removably receiving a battery operated portable video tape machine. A standard extends up from the body portion at the front of the body on which a video camera is supported at eye level. The standard has adjustment vertically, laterally, and pivotally for suitable positioning of the camera to the eye of the cameraman. The framework includes side and front brackets for removably holding accessory equipment.

The field of the invention relates to bicycle systems, especially to bicycle systems adapted for use with smartphones, to smartphones configured for use with bicycle systems, and to methods and to computer software for use with such bicycle systems or smartphones, and to servers configured to communicate with such bicycle systems or smartphones. According to a first aspect of the invention, there is provided a bicycle system including a bicycle, the bicycle system including a processor integral to the bicycle, the bicycle system further including a battery integral to the bicycle, wherein the processor is powerable by the battery, the bicycle system including a smartphone holder configurable to receive a smartphone and to connect the smartphone to the processor, wherein in use the smartphone holder is attachable to, and detachable from, the smartphone. Advantages include that the smartphone can be charged by the battery, the smartphone can communicate with the processor so as to receive various information such as maintenance-related information of the bicycle system, the bicycle system can investigate the smartphone identity to check for unauthorized use of the bicycle system, the smartphone is held during bicycle system travel which reduces the risk of damage to the smartphone, and the bicycle system shape is more aerodynamic than that of a bicycle to which a processor and/or a battery has merely been bolted-on.
Abstract:
A microcode authentication unit provides access to a secure hardware unit. A microcode segment is provided to the microcode authentication unit, which generates a signature corresponding to the segment and compares the size and signature of the segment against stored values. If a match is determined, the unit enables access to the secure hardware unit.
Abstract:
A curable composition comprising magnetically active elastic microspheres that are filled with a curing agent. The elastomeric microspheres are predispersed throughout the curable resin and are magnetostrictive. Cure of the adhesive is initiated when an external magnetic field is applied that physically distorts or ruptures the magnetic microspheres due to a magnetostrictive effect from the magnetic field.
