摘要: An elongated encoder-strip scale, most typically plastic, is secured to an elongated encoder-strip substrate, most typically metal. The scale has indicia that are at least partially exposed for use in determining the position of a carriage with respect to a chassis in a large-format automatic image-related device--which may be for example a printer, a plotter, or a scanner. The chassis of the image-related device supports an image-bearing sheet, and the carriage scans across the chassis carrying apparatus for forming or sensing marks on the sheet. Preferably the scale is taller than the substrate and mounted to overlap both edges of the substrate, guarding the edges of the substrate. The scale is preferably substantially transparent and mounted for transmission of an optical beam. The substrate is preferably tensioned across the chassis (preferably at a tension under which the scale alone would fail) and threaded, with the scale, through an aperture in the carriage--even during scanning. The scale is preferably without direct support by the chassis. Preferably the scale or substrate, or both, are used in common--but in different relative positions--in more than one model of image-related device.

摘要: Pixel data processing system and method for producing a spatial multiplexed image of a 3-D object for use in stereoscopic viewing thereof. The pixel data sets of each pair of first and second perspective (e.g. left and right) images of a 3-D object, are stored in a first and second memory arrays. The pixel data sets of the first and second perspective images are processed in accordance with complimentary spatial modulation functions, so as to produce third and fourth pixel data sets representative of first and second spatially modulated images consisting of first and second pixel patterns, respectively. The pixel data sets of the first and second spatially modulated images are stored in third and fourth memory arrays. The pixel data sets of the first and second spatially modulated images are processed in accordance with a spatial multiplexing function, so as to produce a fifth pixel data set representing a spatially multiplexed image (SMI) of the object. The pixel data set of the spatially multiplexed image is stored in a fifth memory array, and is then translated into a set of vector quantities that are used to graphically present (e.g. record or display) the spatially multiplexed image for viewing through an optically transparent micropolarization panel and a pair of passively polarized spectacles.

摘要: A method and associated apparatus for use in an automated sign generator to produce enhanced special effect graphics and single layer multi-color signs on a vinyl sheet material uses a paint pen carried by the tool head of the generator which in coordinated movement with the vinyl sheet traces the shape of the sign. In one embodiment, the sheet material is cut along a line falling within the painted stripe defining the graphic. The cut graphic having the desired visual special effect is removed from the sheet material along the cut line. The apparatus further includes a guide wheel assembly located between a material deflector and a feed roller for riding along the marginal portions of the sheet material causing it to move along a broken plane path to prevent buckling as it moves relative to the tool head and to prevent smudging of the painted graphic. A cam clip assembly is located behind the feed roller and intermediate the feed roller and a cam shaft and rides along the marginal portions of the sheet material to cause the material to move along a broken plane path to prevent its buckling and avoid smearing of a painted graphic on the surface. A paint pen which is interchangeable with a cutting tool is carried by the tool head and includes a number of interchangeable paint nibs.

摘要: An ink sensing system for a vector plotter in which a pen is adapted to be raised and lowered from a drawing media surface along a system axis. An optical detection system is provided which has a focal point on the system axis and below the media surface when the pen is in its lowered position and at the media surface when the pen is in its raised position. The optical detection system includes a source of illumination and a detector system to determine the degree of reflectance from the media surface to indicate the presence or absence of ink on the media surface. In a particular embodiment the optical detection system is moveable and the movement of the optical detection system is coupled to the movement of the pen. Furthermore, the focal point of the optical detection system coincides substantially with the last point of contact of the pen with the media surface when the pen is in the raised position.

摘要: A graduated, highly tensioned metallic codestrip is used in a large-format automatic image-related device such as a D-size or larger plotter, yielding positional precision even better than those of prior small-format devices. Preferably perforations in the strip are the graduations, used in determining position of a carriage that holds image transducers (e. g., pens). The strip passes through a slot (open along one edge, closed at the other) in a perforation sensor. The image transducers are very close to the slotted sensor and the strip, to minimize the effect of disturbances arising between the strip and transducers. Two unperforated portions of the strip--one relatively broad, and another relatively narrow border portion--provide very good structural stability for the tensioned strip. Stability under tension is enhanced by wrapping the strip partway around a stanchion at each end. The perforations are formed between the two unperforated portions at a periodicity of one hundred fifty orifices or more per inch, defining position within one three-hundredth of an inch or better. Preferably the strip is oriented with the narrow border nearer the closed edge of the sensor slot. In a multielement marking-device system the novel strip yields fine coordination for marks in adjacent swaths or by plural pens. It also helps meet stringent demands of bidirectional marking.

摘要: A plotter system having a plotter wherein, in a state in which the fore end of a writing utensil grasped by a pen carriage is brought into contact with the surface of a sheet placed on a recording surface, the pen carriage is moved in X-Y directions relative to the sheet on this sheet in accordance with movement data items transferred from a host computer, thereby to depict figures, characters etc. on the sheet surface. The plotter system comprises a nonvolatile memory capable of storing therein movement data for a stipulated pattern to be used in depicting the stipulated pattern on the sheet surface from among the movement data items transferred from the host computer to the plotter. In depicting the figures, the characters etc. including the stipulated pattern on the sheet surface by the use of the plotter, the stipulated pattern is depicted in accordance with the movement data stored in the nonvolatile memory, and the figures, the characters etc. other than the stipulated pattern are depicted by driving the plotter in accordance with the movement data items transferred from the host computer, except the movement data for the stipulated pattern.

摘要: Process for the storing of drawing data by means of a CAD film-card laser plotter, a microfilm card and a CAD film-card laser plotter for its implementation are described. A microfilm card has two film regions (2, 3), each of which is formed by a film window (4, 5) with a photographic film. Vector and/or raster data for generating an ordinary film image are stored on one film region (2), the associated CAD model data which are used by a CAD drawing system are stored on the other film region (3). In this way, the CAD model data need not be separately digitally stored. The CAD model data can be read from the film region (3) back into the CAD drawing system by means of a scanner as needed.

摘要: Graphic plotting network methods and apparatus are disclosed for connecting one or more video signal sources, such as computer workstations and/or RGB dameras, to a single plotter. In a preferred embodiment, a video chain unit (VCU) is connected to each of the sources for receiving analog video and/or digital serial and/or digital parallel information, and the VCUs are interconnected in series with one another and with a video processing unit (VPU) which is in turn connected to the plotter. The interconnection is made in series such that any VCU may communicate with the VPU even if other VCUs in the chain are powered off and such that the VPU (and the plotter) can be placed anywhere in the chain. Each VCU has a set of switches for setting the plot parameters, for acquiring a plot, for repeating a plot, and for aborting a plot in process, and an indicator to show when the plotter is ready to acquire a plot. Also in a preferred embodiment, a "handshake" communication is carried out between a transmitting VCU and the VPU during a video blanking interval. The VCU transmits to the VPU a command and identification signal identifying the VCU and indicating that the VCU is ready to transmit a video signal representing an image to be plotted, the VPU replies with a command signal commanding transmission of the video signal, and the VCU then transmits the video signal to the VPU. The command signal preferably echoes the identification signal and includes a signal indicative of a sequence in which one or more components of the video signal are to be transmitted. The VCU preferably also transmits to the VPU a signal representing plot parameters and/or a signal representing a number of copies of the image to be plotted. The video signal is converted at the VPU to a form recognizable by the plotter, for example, a bit map of the image to be plotted.
