A system for producing a suitable fuel from waste material including a dispersion tank in which is located a rotary dispersion and agitation system comprising external vanes, rotary and stationary plates having opposing faces fitted with intermeshing shear blocks, forming an attrition zone therebetween for grinding and dispersing solids in a liquid blend stock. A method is provided for varying the displacement between the shear blocks to control the fineness of the grinding of the waste material. A method is provided for discharging metal from the dispersion tank and a pump is provided for circulating liquid from the dispersion tank to an accumulation tank and for recirculating the liquid from the accumulation tank to the dispersion tank. Feeding systems are provided for delivering solid waste material to the dispersion tank and include systems for grinding drums containing waste material, expressing waste material from the drums and auguring waste material from the drums. The present invention also provide a method of processing waste material and a blend stock which provides a suitable fuel and includes the steps of grinding the waste material in a tank containing the blend stock with the grinding being in at least part provided by the coaction between a rotating impeller and a stationary plate so that the degree to which the waste material is ground is controlled by controlling the spacing between the plate and the impeller.

A method for utilizing landfill-prohibited solid hazardous waste material as an energy source in a cement kiln is provided. The method comprises obtaining landfill-prohibited solid hazardous waste materials suitable for use in a cement kiln, combining the solid waste materials with a liquid fuel in a milling apparatus to form a mixture, grinding the mixture in the milling apparatus in a manner reducing the particulate size of the solid hazardous waste material to form a fuel slurry, and delivering the fuel slurry directly into the flame of the cement kiln. The grinding of the solid hazardous waste material in the milling apparatus prior to its introduction into the kiln provides for a rapid and instantaneous ignition of the solid hazardous waste materials thereby not adversely affecting the forming clinker or the operating parameters of the kiln.

A process for disposing of sewage sludge comprising the steps of, (1) dewatering the sewage sludge to produce an aqueous slurry of sewage sludge having a solids content of about 10 to 30 wt. %; (2) simultaneously heating and shearing said dewatered sewage sludge at about 150.degree. F. to 210.degree. F. in the absence of air for 0.5 seconds to 60 minutes while being continuously passed through a tubular-shaped processing means containing a plurality of rotating agitators, thereby producing a pumpable slurry having a viscosity of less than about 2000 centipoise; (3) dewatering the sewage sludge if necessary; (4) mixing at a temperature in the range of about ambient to 180.degree. F. in a ribbon or in-line static mixer the slurry of sewage sludge from (2) and/or (3) with a supplemental solid carbonaceous fuel e.g. coal and/or petroleum-coke to produce a pumpable aqueous slurry of sewage sludge and supplemental fuel having a solids content in the range of about 50 to 60 wt. %; (5) mixing the slurry of sewage sludge and supplemental fuel from (4) in a steam jacketed continuous rotary disc mixer at about 180.degree. F. to 250.degree. F. while removing steam to produce a pumpable slurry of dewatered sewage sludge and solid fuel having a solids content of 50 to 65 wt. % and a HHV of 6,000 to 18,000 BTU/LB; and (6) burning said pumpable slurry from (5) in a partial oxidation gasifier, furnace, boiler, or incinerator to produce an effluent gas stream. In a preferred embodiment, the effluent gas stream is cleaned and purified and non-contaminating ash and slag are separated. By this process, noxious sewage sludge may be disposed of without contaminating the environment. By-product synthesis gas, reducing gas, or fuel gas may be produced.

An integrated method of removing alkali metal compounds from sulfur-bearing coal is disclosed. The coal is comminuted (4) and mixed (10) with water (8) to form a slurry (12). In the preferred embodiment, the slurry (12) is comingled with an SO.sub.2 -bearing gas (16) in a transport pipeline (52) to form an acidic slurry which dissolves the alkali compounds out of the coal. The slurry is then separated (22) into a solid portion (24) and a liquid portion (26), the solid portion (24) being combusted (34) to form the SO.sub.2 -bearing gas (16).

A pumpable slurry of mineral particles, e.g., coal, in water contains 50 to 85% by weight of mineral particles based on the combined weight of mineral particles and water. The mineral component contains at least 30% by weight of coarse particles having a particle size in the range 5 to 50 mm, 10 to 40% by weight of fine particles having a particle size less than 200 micron and the balance to 100% of intermediate sized particles.The slurry is stable without the use of additives and can be pumped through a pipeline.

It is an object of the invention to provide for a coal in oil mixture a combustor or burner system in which the ash resulting from burning the mixture is of submicron particle size.The burner system comprises, as shown in FIGS. 1 and 2, a burner section (11), a flame exit nozzle (12), a fuel nozzle section (13) and an air tube (14) by which preheated air is directed into burner section (11). Regulated air pressure is delivered to a fuel nozzle (34) in nozzle section (13) through a line (9). Means (8),(16), and (17),(29),(6),(30) and (31) are provided for directing a mixture of coal particles and oil from a drum (15) to a nozzle (34) of FIG. 2 at a desired rate and pressure while a means (19) returns excess fuel to the fuel drum (15). Means (25) is provided for keeping the coal particles uniformly distributed in the coal in oil mixture in fuel drum (15). Means (29), (30), and (31) provide for stable fuel pressure supply from fuel pump (8) to fuel nozzle (34).A chamber is provided in the nozzle body (35), as shown in FIG. 3, and nozzle (34) is threaded into the nozzle body (35) inwardly of an end wall (36). Fuel flows from chamber (37) through axial passageways (45) and then radially inwardly through fuel passageways (44). The fuel enters passageway (43) and is atomized by regulated air pressure passing therethrough and exiting at the nozzle orifice.

A continuous process for the combustion of solid fuels in a fluidized bed of solid particles under conditions such that flue gas is essentially free of dust and oxides of sulfur and nitrogen. Fuel is charged as an aqueous slurry and additional water condensed from the flue gas is recycled to the combustion zone. Combustion is promoted both by water vapor and alkali added with fuel slurry, while the alkali serves also to neutralize and remove sulfur in completely oxidized, or sulfate, form. Useful heat is recovered from the hot gases leaving the combustion zone and, in some cases, from the fluidized bed itself. Under the pressure of the system recovery of heat results in condensation of water which serves to scrub dust from the flue gas, slurry product ash and furnish recycle water, which controls reaction temperature as well as promoting the combustion.
