As a vehicle turns a corner, the system moves the condenser lens along the arcuate path, so as to direct the light beam in the direction that the vehicle is moving. Because the condenser lens follows an arcuate path, the light beam is not distorted, allowing for greater angular displacement of the light beam.

The lighting unit comprises a first lighting element (10) and a second lighting element (11). In operation, the first lighting element (10) has a comparatively high light output. The second lighting element (20, 20′) has a light output, in operation, which is relatively low in comparison with that of the first lighting element (10). The lighting unit comprises a control mechanism (40) including a switching means with a toggle function that is responsive to sequential switches in the power applied to the lighting unit. By selecting the proper switching sequence, either the first lighting element or the second lighting element or both lighting elements are switched on. Preferably, the first lighting element is a compact fluorescent discharge vessel (10), and the second lighting element comprises a plurality of LEDs (20, 20′). The lighting unit enables remote-controlled switching between orientation light (night lamp) and normal light, using the toggle function in the lighting unit.

The present invention is directed to illuminating a one-dimensional spatial light modulator using an illumination system employing multiple light sources. The illumination system comprises a parallel array of light sources which provides a plurality of light outputs to an optical train. The optical train effectively combines the light sources into a single light source. The single light source provides a single light output for uniformly illuminating the spatial light modulator. The optical train includes a first optical train for receiving the light outputs from each light source, magnifying each light output, and overlaying each of the light outputs to form a single real magnified image. A mode conversion lens receives the single real magnified image, converts a mode profile of the single real magnified image into a top hat mode profile, and outputs a diverging light beam with a top hat mode profile. A second optical train shapes the light beam into an appropriate spatial geometry in such a manner that the light beam effectively illuminates the entire spatial light modulator, and directs the light beam onto the spatial light modulator.

A light emitting diode lighting system comprising a plate having an exterior periphery and a central generally circular attachment zone of a reduced circumference. The plate has an upper surface with a plurality of mounting areas thereon. The mounting areas include a plurality of mounting areas in a generally circular exterior array adjacent to the exterior periphery and a generally circular interior array around the attachment zone and at least one circular intermediate arrays there between. A plurality of light emitters have light emitting upper areas and with lower areas formed with electrical leads for illuminating the upper areas with intermediate securement means there between. Each of the light emitters is secured within an associated mounting area on the plate. A reflector is in a generally truncated cone-shaped configuration with a central axis perpendicular to the plate and a generally circular smaller end of a reduced circumference positioned within the attachment zone of the circular plate and with a generally circular upper end of an enlarged circumference positioned above the plate. An intermediate surface is there between. The intermediate surface of the reflector has a continually diminishing circumference from its upper end to its lower end and is located entirely above the light emitters and with the reflector and plate having a common axis there through.
