A fuel heating apparatus for an internal combustion engine or other type of spark ignition engine having an associated pressurised fuel delivery system, the apparatus comprising a chamber for receiving a volume of a pressurised liquid fuel; and means for heating the fuel within the chamber to provide heated liquid fuel to the fuel delivery system of the engine, to thereby minimise condensation of the fuel and facilitate ignition of the engine within relatively low ambient temperature environments. The apparatus has particular application with ‘heavy fuels’, such as diesel or kerosene, and improves the reliability and performance of the engine especially during ‘cold starts’ and while transitioning to fast-idling.

The air heater includes a heating element having a substantially planar portion and a flange portion. The flange portion is positioned at an angle to the planar portion. A structure is operable to position the heating element in communication with the air entering the combustion chamber of the engine. In addition, a thermal expansion joint for interconnecting a heating element and a frame is disclosed.

A heating element for a fuel tank takes the form of an immersion heater commonly used in process applications to heat the contents of a fuel tank. The heater would be encased within a well for ease of servicing and replacement as well as safety. The tank heater would be wired in parallel with an engine block heater and connected to a suitable power cord, which would be plugged into a receptacle powered by alternating current. This feature allows the energizing of two heaters from only power cord and is identical to the procedure followed for only the block heater. The thermostat would be provided with an operating thermostat to keep the diesel fuel at the proper temperature, as well as an over-limit termination device for safety purposes.

An air intake heating system and method for heating intake air for internal combustion engines is disclosed including a microprocessor based controller, intake manifold air temperature monitoring means, engine speed monitoring means, and electrical air heating elements actuated by the controller in response to various combinations of sensed engine speed, sensed intake manifold air temperature and sensed battery condition.
