The invention concerns a method for peeling veneer from a log, wherein the centering device is calibrated during the peeling process without interrupting the production. In the method in accordance with the invention, the around-contour of the log is defined by means of techniques of prior art in the centering device by measuring the distance between the surface of the log and the rotation axis at several positions at the length of the log, and the rotation centres of the ends of the log are set to the chucks of the lathe in accordance with this determination of contour. The validity of the centering is controlled, and a correction factor for the centering of a next log is transmitted to the apparatus commanding the centering device.

The present invention discloses a log sawing system comprising multiple cutting blades. The multiple cutting blades are positioned to cut laterally or perpendicular to the centerline of the log which is to be cut. The logs are transported into cutting position using some type of log positioner. The multiple cutting blades are rotatably mounted on an arm which is pivotally mounted on a shaft in groups, being driven by an electrical or like motor, all of which are mounted onto a platform positioned adjacent to the log to be cut. Hydraulic lifters are used to partially rotate the saw blades into the cutting position adjacent the log. Means utilizing a computer and lasers are provided to develop a log cutting solution to best utilize the logs.

One embodiment of the present invention is a compact, low-cost, lightweight, versatile and easy-to-operate, processor-controlled carving and multi-purpose shaping device (“PCCMPS machine”). The PCCMPS machine that represents one embodiment of the present invention is configured, in part, similarly to common, commercially available portable wood planers and ubiquitous laser and ink-jet computer printers, with work pieces fed into the PCCMPS machine in a horizontal direction. The PCCMPS machine includes a motor-powered cutting head that can power detachable bits to drill, cut, shape, and rout a work piece under processor and computer control. The cutting head may be translated, under processor control, back and forth across the surface of the work piece in a direction perpendicular to the direction in which the work piece is fed into the PCCMPS machine and moved by motor-powered rollers. The cutting head may be translated up and down, in a vertical direction, approximately perpendicular to the surface of the work piece. The processor can thus position a cutting bit at any point on a surface of, near the surface of, or within the work piece, via a combination of lateral and vertical translations of the cutting head and horizontal translation of the work piece, and can control the speed at which the bit rotates as the computer moves the rotating bit from one position to another position relative to the surface of the work piece in order to carve and shape elaborate, three-dimensional designs onto the work piece.

The present invention discloses a log singulator having a fully rotatable lifter arm member, i.e., 360 degrees rotatable, which is used to singulate logs from groups of logs. Furthermore, the lifter arm of the present invention will positively push the logs over the top point of the log cradle because it is rounded at the top point, thereby allowing the tip of lifter arm to remain in contact with the log.
