A crop carrier may be drawn by the tractor and the harvesting unit may be drawn by the crop carrier. The harvesting unit includes a guide scoop and associated power driven means for moving harvested material along the guide scoop and into the crop carrier. Various known harvesting devices may be interchangeably mounted to extend along the forward edge of the scoop and substantially perpendicular to the path of travel.

A turf edger is attached to a traction unit in the form of a self-propelled turf grooming or working vehicle. The turf edger has a narrow U-shaped edging blade carried on an edger frame. The edging blade oscillates to cut and free a strip of material along a boundary between a turf surface and a non-turf surface. When this strip of material is brushed away, a clean edge is provided along the boundary without the need for any manual hoeing. Side walls of the edging blade at least partially nest around a ground engaging roller on the edger frame to more easily cut horizontal grass runners in the turf surface. The edger frame is selectively movable between a lowered edging position and a raised transport position by the operator. Limited ground following action is provided for the edger frame when the edger frame is in the edging position.

A cutter guard in the form of housing (8), enclosing the volume generated by the rotating cutter blades (5) of a lawn edge trimmer (1, 51), golf bunker trimmer or like cutting implement is disclosed. The housing (8) is provided with at least one viewing port (20, 21) through which the plane of rotation (15) of the cutter blades (5) can be observed by the operator. To prevent egress of cutting debris, each viewing port (20, 21) is occluded by means of either transparent material or mesh material. A supporting wheel arrangement for a golf bunker edge trimmer (51) is also disclosed. The support wheel (66) is provided with a coaxial disc (60) which engages the grass (61) adjacent the edge (53) of the bunker (54). The disc (60) prevents the wheel (56) and trimmer (51) slipping downhill towards the bunker (54) whilst traversing steeply sloping grass uphill of the bunker. Dual wheels (66) and an independently rotating disc (52) are also disclosed.

The stems and limbs of a root crop plant are lifted from the ground, folded over a gathering bar, and grasped by an auger-paddle. The roots below the crop are severed by a cutter bar which resembles a rod weeder. While the crop is held the soil beneath the crop is pulled from the be in which the crop grows into a furrow on either side of the bed. As much as possible the root crop is cleaned as it is lifted up by the rotation of the paddle-auger while the limbs and stems of the plant are caught within the paddle-auger and held by the helicoil. After they are lifted free of the soil they are moved from two beds toward a furrow between those two beds and discharged in a windrow by a roller which rotates the opposite direction of the paddle-augers.

During the first pass across a field of row-planted sugar or red beets, the apparatus digs the beets from a specific number of rows (six being illustrated but the apparatus herein disclosed can be structured for four or five rows as well), elevates the beets at one side of the apparatus to a given height and discharges the elevated beets into a tank from which they are periodically re-elevated and discharged into a truck at the side of the apparatus opposite the side at which they are elevated and re-elevated, the truck trailing the apparatus over rows form which beets have been removed when not receiving re-elevated beets. On the next pass in a reverse direction across the field, the truck runs in the swath where the beets have been removed during the first pass, and the beets during the second pass are continually discharged into the the truck without resort to storage and without re-elevating the beets as done on the first pass. In this way, beets are run over by the truck only on the first pass, and even then to a minimum degree. Also the apparatus is better balanced by elevating beets at one side of the apparatus, and discharging them at the other side. A hydraulic system automatically controls certain motors in determining whether beets are to be discharged into a truck or stored. The apparatus additionally includes a special cleaning bed that assures a more complete cleaning of the beets.

A machine for lifting sugar beets from the soil, separating the soil and foreign matter from the sugar beets and elevating the sugar beets for loading on a transport vehicle. The machine has beet lifting wheels which lift the beets from the soil and direct the beets to link conveyors. The conveyors carry the beets to one end of a grab and cleaning roller assembly. The grab and cleaning roller assembly has a plurality of smooth and spiral ribbed rollers that are rotated to clean and move the beets the length of the roller assembly to a disc assembly. The disc assembly comprises a plurality of discs that are rotated in a direction to move the beets to the inlet area of a loading elevator. The loading elevator is independently supported on the ground with a wheel assembly. Adjusting structure is used to adjust the heighth of the elevator. Separate controlled hydraulic motors are operable to drive the conveyors, the disc assembly and the loading elevator. A pump mounted on the machine is operable to deliver hydraulic fluid under pressure to the separate hydraulic motors.

A root crop harvester having a horizontal cleaning conveyor for conveying harvested roots to one side of the machine while simultaneously removing excess dirt therefrom, and a vertical conveyor for receiving roots from the horizontal conveyor, elevating them and discharging them either into a receptacle alongside the harvester or into a storage tank mounted on the harvester frame. The storage tank has a transversely extending opening in its forward portion disposed directly above the cleaning conveyor, and a floor conveyor selectively operable to move roots lying on the floor forwardly to the opening so that they can gravitate there-through onto the cleaning conveyor to be recleaned.
