摘要:
A method and apparatus for adaptively controlling a variable gain amplifier (VGA). The operation of the VGA is separated into a low gain mode and a high gain mode and the mode in which the VGA is currently operating in is adaptively sensed. A threshold voltage is compared to a control voltage of the VGA; if the VGA is currently operating in the low gain mode and the control voltage is higher than the threshold voltage, the VGA is switched from the low gain mode to the high gain mode; and if the VGA is currently operating in the high gain mode and the control voltage is lower than the threshold voltage, the VGA is switched from the high gain mode to the low gain mode.

In an operational transconductance amplifier (OTA), resistors are bridge-connected to source terminals of MOSFETs that form a differential pair of the OTA. Capacitors are connected in parallel between the resistors in order to remove a DC signal component. The C-R circuit forms a high pass filter in order to intercept the DC component. Accordingly, even if there is a difference in transistor characteristic between the MOSFETs, a DC offset voltage does not appear in differential output terminals of the OTA and an output error can be eliminated. When the OTA is used in an AGC amplifier, an output dynamic range of the AGC amplifier can be made wide owing to the removal of the DC offset voltage.

A bias current is generated for an unbalanced differential pair that is proportional to the transconductance gain of the differential pair. When the transconductance gain varies (e.g., due to temperature variations), the bias current varies in proportion thereby maintaining a constant offset voltage. In some implementations, a voltage to current converter circuit generates the bias current from a constant reference voltage that is independent of temperature and voltage supply variations (e.g., a bandgap reference voltage).

A differential amplifier circuit comprises a differential pre-amplifying stage which is designed to allow an input signal with a first common mode voltage range, and to generate an output which has a narrower common mode voltage variation. This pre-amplifier stage is designed to accept a large common mode input voltage and to process the signal so that it can be amplified by a main amplifying stage which is designed to allow an input signal with a smaller common mode voltage range.

An operational amplifier circuit may include a fully differential amplifier circuit that has a common mode feedback, the fully differential amplifier circuit performing operational amplification using a common mode base voltage as a center, a common mode detection circuit that detects a common mode output voltage of the fully differential amplifier circuit, a sample and hold circuit that performs sample and hold of an output of the common mode detection circuit, an operational circuit that detects a deviation between the output of the sample and hold circuit and a common mode reference voltage, the operational circuit outputting a voltage corresponding to the detected deviation and the common mode reference voltage, and a switching circuit that selects the common mode reference voltage or an output of the operational circuit to output the common mode reference voltage or the output as the common mode base voltage.

The invention relates to analog integrated electronic circuits using differential pairs. The proposal is for a method of automatic correction of offset voltage. The inputs (V1, V2) of the differential circuit are short circuited during a calibration phase distinct from the normal usage phase. A capacitor is charged through the difference of the output currents of the branches of the differential pair in this phase. The voltage at the terminals of the capacitor is compared with at least one threshold. During the normal usage phase following the calibration phase, the result of the comparison is kept in memory. In the normal usage phase, a correction is applied depending on the result kept in memory to a current source of a follower stage upstream of the differential pair.

An amplifier includes a signal amplification part that outputs an output signal obtained by amplifying an input signal and a common mode voltage VCM of the output signal, and a common mode feedback part that outputs a signal according to a difference between the common mode voltage VCM and a reference potential Vref as a regulation signal SREG. The regulation signal SREG from the common mode feedback part is fed back to a current source of the signal amplification part and a current source of the common mode feedback part.

In an example embodiment, an apparatus, such as a two stage operational amplifier, comprising a first stage amplifier having an input and an output, and a second stage amplifier having an input and an output, the input of the second stage amplifier is coupled to the output of the first stage amplifier. A first bias circuit is operable to set a common mode voltage of the first amplifier. A second bias circuit is operable to set a common mode voltage of the second amplifier. A first feedback circuit is coupled to the first bias circuit and the output of the first stage. The first feedback circuit is operable to control the common mode voltage of the first stage amplifier based on the common mode voltage set by the first bias circuit and the output of the first stage amplifier.
