Abstract: Method and apparatus for improving the behind-the-targets effects of shaped charge munitions which provides a secondary target defeating mechanism which follows through the opening formed by the high velocity jet which perforates the target. The shaped charge liner may be axially symmetrical in the form of a cone or section of a sphere and behind the apex is mounted the follow through secondary target defeating mechanism which is surrounded by the explosive charge. When the charge is ignited the resulting detonation wave collapses the liner into a high velocity jet or slug that perforates the target after which the follow-through agent is driven through the perforation. The follow-through agent may be pyrophoric or ignitable and such agents will increase the temperature and pressure particularly if the target is a closed target. Other materials may be used and introduced into the target through the perforation.

Abstract: This invention relates to a dual purpose, artillery deliverable, submissile grenade effective for use against both personnel and armored material targets. The grenade has a fragmenting antipersonnel tubular housing means, a hollow, anti-materiel shaped charge cone operatively positioned proximate to the housing means, an explosive means operatively positioned intermediate to the anti-personnel housing and the shaped charge cone for fragmenting the tubular housing means and forcibly expelling the cone from the housing against the armored target, a fuzing means which is actuated by a ribbon stabilizer is fixedly attached to one end of the housing means to initiate the explosive means upon impact of the grenade on the target, and for holding the grenade in a safe unarmed position when the grenade is being delivered by artillery to the target.

Abstract: A dual function bomb combining anti-personnel and armor piercing capabilities in a single bomb and capable of discriminating between targets. A frangible member in the bomb nose shears upon impact with a hard target, such as armor, and drives a firing pin into a detonator in an arming rotor to cause instantaneous initiation of an armor piercing shaped charge. Impact with soft targets, such as earth, will not shear the frangible member but causes an inertia firing pin to initiate a propellant charge and a pyrotechnic delay. The propellant charge ejects the warhead upward three to ten feet at which time the pyrotechnic delay initiates the shaped charge for optimum effect against unprotected personnel in the vicinity.

Abstract: Multi-charge munition suitable for defeating a concrete target consists of a detonatable array of hollow primary charges (14) of explosive supported laterally of a line of target penetration on which is disposed a secondary explosive charge (48). Simultaneous detonation of the primary charges in the array causes jet penetrators to be projected together towards the target which produce wide boreholes in concrete suitable for the subsequent emplacement and detonation of the secondary charge. The munition may be an aerially-deliverable bomb or submunition.In one preferred embodiment, the primary charges (14) are positioned in a convergent configuration behind a forwardly-tapered secondary charge (48). Detonation of the primary charges projects penetrators forwardly passed the sides of the secondary charge and thrusts the secondary charge into the borehole produced in the target by the penetrators.
