Abstract:
An ignition composition effective to form a porous igniter substance capable of adhering to an associated inflator apparatus surface for use in an automotive inflatable restraint system and a method for preparing a porous igniter coating formed from the ignition composition are provided. The ignition composition includes a fuel, an oxidizer, a polymeric binder and a blowing agent effective, upon decomposition, to increase the surface area of the porous igniter substance. The porous igniter substance or coating is formed by heating the ignition composition to a predetermined temperature.
Abstract:
The present invention is directed to a lead-free, nontoxic pyrotechnic composition, comprising: 30-80 wt % of bismuth subnitrate; and 10-50 wt % of a fuel, wherein all weight percents are based on the total weight of the composition. The present invention is also directed to a lead-free, nontoxic priming composition, comprising: 20-80 wt % of the above nontoxic pyrotechnic composition; 20-50 wt % of an initiator explosive; and 2-10 wt % of a sensitizer, wherein all weight percents are based on the total weight of the composition.

Abstract:
The present invention is directed to an improved method of blasting whereby the formation of nitrogen oxide after-blast fumes is reduced. This helps satisfy the need for better fume characteristics in blasting. The method reduces the formation of nitrogen oxides in after-blast fumes resulting from the detonation of a blasting agent in a borehole. The method comprises formulating the blasting agent to contain from about 1% to about 20% silicon powder.
Abstract:
This invention is for an improved sparkler which has the feature of being self-igniting. The sparkler comprises a rod 12 having one end which functions as a handle 14. Adjacent to the handle 14 on the rod 12 and extending generally along the remaining length of the rod 12 is a pyrotechnic composition coating 16. Bonded to the pyrotechnic composition coating 16 at a point furthest from the handle 14 is a self-igniting match head tip 18. When the match head tip 18 is struck against a suitable surface, ignition occurs and the sparkler's display begins. This self-ignition feature distinguishes the invention from the sparklers currently available which require heat or flame from an external source to be applied to the sparkler to cause ignition.
Abstract:
Compositions are provided which, when burned, produce significant levels of infrared radiation, but only limited levels of visible radiation. The basic components of the compositions include a binder, an oxidizer, and an organic fuel. Preferred oxidizers include those compounds which produce large quantities of infrared radiation when the flare composition is burned. Such oxidizers include potassium nitrate, cesium nitrate, rubidium nitrate, and combinations of these compounds. The composition preferably includes significant quantities of cesium nitrate as an oxidizer. Selection of the binder is important in order to provide the composition with the desirable characteristics identified above. The binder of the present invention does not produce significant soot when burned. At the same time, the binder serves to form a composition which is processible, avoids chunking, and is compatible with the oxidizers used. It has been found that polymer binders which include relatively short carbon chains (1-6 continuous carbon atoms) are preferred. Examples of such polymers include polyesters, polyethers, polyamides, and polyamines. Similarly, non-soot producing organic fuels are employed.
