A novel class of N-substituted triarylmethane sulfonamides is provided which undergo reversible oxidation into colored form and reversible reduction of the oxidized form into colorless form. Preferred embodiments comprise xanthene sulfonamides having N-aryl substituents, e.g., hydroquinone substituents. These compounds possess redox potentials ranging between about +200 to -500 millivolts and thus are useful as dyes for producing photographic, photothermographic, thermal, and pressure-induced images, as well as being useful as redox indicators in a wide variety of biological and chemical reactions.

Deep blue, green-blue, green, violet or red shades which have excellent sublimation and light fastness are obtained.

Disclosed herein is a novel compound which is excellent in solubility to water around a neutral range, stable in an aqueous solution state for a long period of time, and high in coloring sensitivity with a stable coloring development, and is represented by the general formula (I): ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3 and R.sub.4, which may be the same as or different from one another, represent lower alkyl groups, and X.sub.1 and X.sub.2 both represent --O(CH.sub.2).sub.n SO.sub.3 M in which M is a hydrogen atom, an alkali metal ion or NH.sub.4.sup.+, and n is an integer of 2-4, or either of X.sub.1 and X.sub.2 represents --O(CH.sub.2).sub.n SO.sub.3 M in whch M and n are the same meanings as given above and the other represents a hydrogen atom. This reagent is hardly susceptible of the influence of the serum components such as hemoglobin, bilirubin and so on due to its color having absorption on a longer wavelength side. Disclosed is also a method of quantitatively measuring an oxidative substance, particularly, hydrogen peroxide, by using this color test reagent.

Disclosed is a pressure sensitive recording unit which comprises a single base web sheet and a methine-type dyestuff and an organic oxidizing compound both supported on the single base web sheet, or a combination of first and second base web sheets and the methine-type dyestuff and organic oxidizing compound supported individually on the first and second base web sheets. Such a recording unit includes for example a pressure sensitive recording unit formed in combination of (a) a back-coated topsheet (CB-sheet) making use of microscopic capsules containing a solution obtained by dissolving a methine-type dyestuff in a solvent having a high boiling point and (b) a front-coated undersheet (CF-sheet) carrying an organic oxidizing compound coated thereon. Also disclosed is a pressure sensitive recording unit which includes a base web sheet carrying thereon such a methine-type dyestuff together with a metal ion sequestering agent and/or alkanol amine.
