Abstract: A composition including a first color shifting pigment having a first color shift that extends from a starting color at normal through a plurality of colors as a viewing angle is increased to a final color, wherein the first color shift rotates counterclockwise relative to, and about, an origin of the L*a*b* color space; and a color filter that transmits a portion of the first color shift of the first color shifting pigment and absorbs a remainder of the first color shift of the first color shifting pigment; wherein the composition has a second color shift different from the first color shift; and wherein the second color shift has a first portion that rotates counterclockwise relative to the origin and a second portion that rotates clockwise relative to the origin is disclosed. A security device including the composition is included. A method of making the composition and a method of authenticating the security device are also disclosed.

Abstract: According to examples, a substrate may be moved through a magnetic field, in which the substrate includes a fluid carrier containing magnetically-orientable flakes. The magnetic field may influence the magnetically-orientable flakes to be respectively oriented in one of multiple orientations. In addition, during movement of the substrate through the magnetic field, radiation may be applied onto a plurality of selected portions of the fluid carrier through at least one opening in a mask to cure the fluid carrier at the plurality of selected portions and fix the magnetically-orientable flakes in the plurality of selected portions at the respective angular orientations as influenced by the magnetic field.

Abstract: A diffractive pigment blend or composition is provided which includes a plurality of groups of all-dielectric diffractive pigment flakes. The pigment flakes of each group each include one or more dielectric layers for providing a background color, at least one of which includes a diffractive structure for providing a diffractive effect. Each group of pigment flakes provides a different diffractive effect, and the diffractive pigment blend or composition provides a combined diffractive effect that is a combination of the different diffractive effects. Abstract: An optically variable device may be manufactured by aligning magnetic flakes on a surface of an adhesive layer by applying the flakes onto the adhesive layer surface in presence of a magnetic field, and curing the adhesive layer having magnetic flakes adhered to the adhesive layer. When cured, the adhesive layer holds the magnetic flakes oriented, enabling subsequent encapsulation of the oriented magnetic flakes in a coating layer on the adhesive layer, without a substantial loss of orientation of the magnetic flakes.
