An improved magnetic circuit apparatus and method for manufacturing is disclosed. In one embodiment, the improved magnetic circuit includes an upper assembly and a lower assembly. A selected amount of magnetic flux-enhancing material is disposed within an air gap formed between the upper and lower assemblies, thereby focusing magnetic flux between the assemblies. The magnetic flux-enhancing material reduces magnetic flux loss across the air gap, and thereby eliminates post assembly calibration of the magnetic circuit. When the upper assembly and the lower assembly are fitted together, no calibration is required to tune the magnetic circuit to specified tolerances.

On/off solenoid ball valves of the invention comprise at least one inlet port; at least one pressure control outlet port; at least one exhaust port; at least one check valve positioned between the pressure control outlet port and the exhaust port; and at least one bypass orifice positioned to allow inlet fluid flow to the pressure control outlet port irrespective of whether the valve is in the “on” or “off” position. Because of their ability to provide unique and controlled flows, valves of the invention are able to be used in applications previously off limits to on/off solenoid ball valves.

A liquid crystal device for birefringence compensation and an optical pickup and an optical recording and/or reproducing apparatus that employ the liquid crystal device as a birefringence compensation device are provided. The liquid crystal device includes a liquid crystal layer in which liquid crystal is vertically aligned when an electric field is not applied thereto, and is radially aligned in axial symmetry when the electric field is applied thereto. As a result, phase variation distribution corresponding to birefringence distribution occurring on an optical information storage medium is formed and a phase variation is adjusted according to the magnitude of the applied electric field.

According to the invention, multiple-cylinder internal combustion engines comprise a lifter oil manifold assembly (LOMA) positioned in an improved and beneficial manner. In one embodiment, engines of the invention comprise an engine block comprising a V-valley in which the LOMA is mounted such that longitudinal axes of the plurality of solenoid control valves therein are positioned essentially perpendicular to a vertical axis centrally extending from an angle formed by the V-valley of the engine block. In another embodiment, V-valley of such an engine not only comprises a LOMA but also includes a balance shaft.
