An evaporative emission control system is provided which includes a bypass valve, purge control valve and a vent control valve. To make a leak diagnosis, firstly the vent control valve is closed while the purge control valve is opened, whereby to negatively pressurize the inside of a fuel vapor conduit portion extending from the bypass valve to an intake pipe side. After the pressure in the fuel vapor conduit portion from the bypass valve to the intake pipe is reduced to a predetermined value, the purge control valve is closed. Then, the bypass valve is opened, and after lapse of a predetermined time from the opening of the bypass valve a variation of pressure in a conduit extending from the fuel tank to the purge control valve is asured. Based on the variation of pressure, a leak diagnosis is made. By this, the evaporative emission control system can prevent the fuel vapor in the fuel tank from being drawn into the intake pipe during reduction of pressure in the conduit and thus causing unstable operation of an engine.

There is provided an apparatus for detecting a leak in an evaporative emission control system for an internal combustion engine including a fuel tank, a canister for collecting fuel vapors from the fuel tank, and a purge control valve disposed between the canister and the intake pipe for allowing flow of the fuel vapors from the canister to the intake pipe such that a fuel vapor flow passage is provided which extends from the fuel tank to the purge control valve by way of the canister. The apparatus comprises a vent control valve for selectively opening and closing an atmospheric vent of a canister, an actuating device for actuating the purge control valve and the vent control valve to fully close immediately after the engine starts and thereby closing the fuel vapor flow passage in a way as to prevent communication between an inside and outside of the fuel vapor flow passage, a pressure sensor for detecting a pressure in the fuel vapor flow passage, and a diagnostic device for detecting a leak on the basis of the pressure in the fuel vapor flow passage which reduces with increase of consumption of fuel in the fuel tank after the fuel vapor flow passage is closed.

In a scroll type compressor in which a compression mechanism compresses a gaseous fluid with moving the gaseous fluid along a spiral path to produce a compressed gas, an escaping path is provided for escaping the compressed gas from the compression mechanism at an intermediate portion of the spiral path. A pressure transmission path transmits pressure of the compressed gas to a valve mechanism which is for controlling an open and an close of the escaping path. The pressure transmission path has a delay mechanism for delaying transmission of a change of the pressure to the valve mechanism.

A scroll type compressor is disclosed. The compressor includes a housing having a fluid inlet port and an outlet port. A fixed scroll is fixed within the housing and has a circular end plate from which a first wrap extends. The end plate of the fixed scroll partitions the inner chamber of the housing into a front chamber connected to the fluid inlet port and a rear chamber. The rear chamber is divided into a central chamber connected to the fluid outlet port and an outer chamber. An orbiting scroll, which is disposed in the front chamber, also has a circular end plate from which a second wrap extends. Both wraps interfit at angular and radial offsets to form a plurality of line contacts to define at least one pair of sealed off fluid pockets. The end plate of the fixed scroll has at least two holes which are placed at symmetrical position and connect the fluid pockets to the outer chamber. The end plate also has a communicating hole which connects the first chamber and the outer chamber. Valve members are disposed in the outer chamber for opening and closing each hole. A control mechanism which is disposed in the outer chamber controls the operation of the valve members.
