Abstract: System and techniques for target identification system are described herein. In an example, a system can include a medical instrument for ablating a target and a mechanism for removing the ablated target from an anatomic site into an evacuation path. The evacuation path can include a measurement chamber. The system can also include a turbulence-generation system that can generate turbulence in the measurement chamber. The system can also include a target-identification system that can determine a characteristic of at least a portion of the ablated target in the measurement chamber.

Abstract: A probe of a target identification system can be extended via a first lumen of a viewing instrument, such as for illuminating an area beyond a distal end of the viewing instrument via an optical path of the viewing instrument. An optical response to the illumination of the area can be received via an optical path of the probe and can be split from other optical signals of the optical path. The optical response information can be used to identify characteristics of a target and to adjust parameters of a working instrument such as a working instrument contemporaneously using the probe.

An exemplary surgical feedback control system comprises a feedback analyzer configured to receive a reflected signal from a target in response to electromagnetic radiation directed at a target, and a controller in operative communication with the feedback analyzer. The controller can generate a control signal to a surgical system to perform a predetermined operation based upon the received reflected signal, including determining a composition of the target, or programming a laser setting to direct laser energy to the target.

Abstract: A disposable attachment of the handheld surgical instrument having a distal section extending from the handpiece is provided. The disposable attachment has a proximal tube extending from the disposable attachment. The distal section includes an outer tube and a flexible shaft disposed within the outer tube. The flexible shaft couples with the proximal tube via a proximal coupler at a proximal end of the flexible shaft. The distal section also has an irrigation hypotube, a cooling orifice, and a cutting implement. The irrigation hypotube is disposed on an outer surface of the outer tube and the cooling orifice is disposed at a distal end of the distal section. The cutting implement is disposed at a distal end of the distal section opposite the handpiece.

Abstract: A clotting agent delivery system comprises a frame, a passageway extending along the frame, a discharge opening connected to the passageway, a clotting agent reservoir fluidly connected to the passageway to hold a clotting agent substance, a valve in the passageway to control flow of the substance through the passageway, and an actuator to allow propellent to flow into the passageway, wherein the valve and clotting agent reservoir cooperate to provide clotting agent substance to the discharge opening at constant pressure using the propellant. A method for delivering a clotting agent comprises inserting a delivery catheter into an anatomic area, coupling a clotting agent delivery system to the delivery catheter, the clotting agent delivery system having a reservoir of a clotting agent, operating a valve to release propellant for propelling the clotting agent, and conveying the propellant and the clotting agent to the delivery catheter at a constant pressure.

Abstract: A method for determining a characteristic of material at a target is provided. A target is illuminated with a pulsed light source. A fluorescence signal from the target when the pulsed light source is an “off” state is then sensed. Based on analysis of the fluorescence signal, a characteristic of material at the target is identified. A device can then be controlled based on the identified characteristic of the material at the target.
