A Roots-type machine is connected to an enclosure to be evacuated via a suction inlet portion, and to a primary pump via a delivery outlet portion. A bellows is disposed transversely in the inlet portion, one end of the bellows being fixed in gastight manner in the wall, and the other end being closed and movable, so that the bellows forms a regulating member for regulating the gas-flow sectional area in the inlet portion. The outside face of the movable end of the bellows is subjected to the pressure in the inlet portion, and the inside face of the movable end is subjected to the pressure in the delivery outlet portion via a rod passing through the wall, and via a channel. The invention applies to Roots-type machines, in particular for automatically regulating the pumping speed so as to match it to the flow-rate of the corresponding primary pump.

The pump comprises a stator constituted by an alternating sucession of stator plates (22) and stator rings (21) defining a sequence of compression chambers (20), and a rotor assembly comprising two shafts (24, 25) each having a compression lobe (28) in each of the compression chambers (20), with the compression lobes being placed on and fixed to their shafts during assembly of the pump, thereby enabling the axial clearance between each lobe and the adjacent stator plate to be individually adjusted, with each lobe being constituted by a body (29) and a clamping plate (30) which is fixed to the body by screws (34) which compress a set of two conical rings (32, 33), one of which (33) penetrates into the other while being compressed radially, thereby fixing the lobe in place. The assembly melthod consists in using a assembly plate (23) having a portion of extra thickness j penetrating into the stator ring over a distance corresponding to the desired clearance between the lobes and the stator plate (22). The lobes are positioned angularly by means of rods (45) and they are positioned axially by thrusting them against the assembly plate (23) by means of assembly screws (48). Once this has been done, the lobes are fixed to their shafts by tightening the clamping screws (34) which compress the conical rings (32, 33) causing them to clamp against the shaft.

Angular adjustment between a gear (a form of hub) and its (lobe carrying) shaft permits a desired angular phase adjustment between the intermeshing lobes. The gear moves axially on its shaft and is held in place by positive screw or nut on one face and retained on the other face by a belleville spring. Rotation of the nut causes axial displacement of the gear and consequent phase adjustment.

A central axis rotary piston machine, e.g., a motor or a pump. A pair of diametrically opposed sector-shaped hollow blades are mounted on rotation on each of two coaxial shafts and arranged in a housing including a pair of flanges fixed to the blades and a fixed enclosure extending about the blades. Each flange is also provided with an opening in communication with the hollow interior of the blade on which it is fixed. The relative angular position of the blades on one shaft with respect to the blades on the other shaft is determined by meshing quasi-elliptical gear wheel in cooperation with a differential gear which is provided for reducing the forces of inertia for given angular velocities. The differential gear includes a differential wheel mounted for rotation with each of the shafts, star pinions, and gear wheels for mounting the star pinions which transmit power between the machine and means external to the machine and having relatively slow speed variations. The degree of compression in the chambers of variable volume formed between consecutive blades is determined by the formula : t Beta - delta / Alpha - delta where delta is the angle included between the radial side of the sector-shaped blades, and Alpha and Beta are the angles defining the limit positions of the center line of consecutive blades on alternate shafts movable towards and away from each other during the operating cycle of the machine.
