Abstract: A printer in which loading of print media is greatly facilitated and in which modular construction is used in order to substantially reduce the number of parts normally needed for this type of printer. The printer includes a base and an associated cover that encloses an interior region of the printer. The cover is movable between opened and closed positions and mounts a spring biased platen roller which is engageable with a printhead fixed in the base, when the cover is closed. A cutter mechanism, including a fixed blade mounted to the cover and a reciprocating blade mounted in the base also separates whenever the cover is opened in order to further facilitate print media loading. The printhead is secured to a printhead mounting and control module which also includes componentry and circuitry needed to drive the printhead. The module which may be in the form of a circuit board assembly also mounts control switches which are actuatable by other printer structure or by buttons that are accessible from the exterior of the printer. A resilient alignment mechanism is used to promote uniform cutting contact between the fixed blade and reciprocating blade when the cover is closed.

Abstract: The present invention provides a novel structure of a tape cartridge accommodating a printing tape and an ink ribbon used for printing, which prevents the printing tape from being stuck in a cartridge case or the ink ribbon from being slackened. The tape cartridge of the invention has a mechanism for preventing an end of the tape from being reversely moved back into the cartridge case. A typical structure of the mechanism includes an anti-inversion system which prevents a tape core having a tape wound thereon from rotating in a reverse direction, that is, a direction opposite to a normal rotating direction for printing. The anti-inversion effects are removed when the tape cartridge is set in a printing device such as a tape writer to ensure smooth feeding of the tape for printing. When the tape is forcibly pressed back into the cartridge case, a movable platen clamps the tape between the platen and a fixed wall to prevent reverse movement of the tape. The tape cartridge of the invention also includes an anti-slack mechanism for preventing slack of the ink ribbon through engagement of a ribbon winding core with an anti-rotational engagement piece. Engagement of this anti-slack mechanism is also released when the tape cartridge is set in the printing device.

Abstract: For printing a label with user desired margins, a tape printer determines a first region in which a character string is to be printed, and determines a second region encompassing the first region and in which an array of dots is to be printed. The array of dots with the character string superimposed thereon is printed onto the tape. This array of dots is used as a reference to guide cutting of the tape to form a label with user desired margins.

Abstract: A gear mechanism containing a clutch assembly made of an outer member with an offset hub, a wrap spring, a pin wherein the rotation of the pin around the offset hub is less than one revolution. A protrusion on a stop at a fixed location is used to dislodge the wrap spring such that it is incapable of transferring torque to the pin. With the spring dislodged, the pin ceases rotation as the hub continues to rotate. Once the power source reverses the rotation, the spring engages the pin which causes the spring to tighten around the hub. The tightening of the spring causes the spring to transmit torque and consequently move the pin away from the stop. In applications where, in one direction, a rotation of less than one revolution is acceptable, the use of a fixed protrusion to dislodge the spring allows the full torque of the driving member to drive the mechanism in either rotational direction.

Abstract: A label printing apparatus for printing characters on a label. The apparatus includes a controller operable to perform various functions, such as (1) recalling stored common font data for each character selected and being operable to apply a scaling factor to the font data to produce print pixel data for printing the character; (2) deriving characters from the font data to determine sequentially intersections of lines and/or curves of the character with a print line extending heightwise to generate therefrom a set of pixel data for directly printing a column of dots corresponding to the set of pixel data defined at that print line; and/or (3) implementing a preview function which enables all characters of an entire label to be displayed at one time on a display even when the length of the label is greater than the size of the display. The preview function is implemented by the controller reducing the size of the characters to be displayed to such an extent that all of the characters of the label can be displayed simultaneously. Also, the characters that are printed resemble the characters which are displayed.

Abstract: The present invention provides a tape printing device for printing a desirable series of characters on a tape and cutting the tape to a label of a desirable length, and also a tape cartridge used in the tape printing device. The tape cartridge has a characteristic element readably storing specific information on the tape such as a width of the tape. The tape printing device reads the characteristic element to control printing conditions according to the type of the tape cartridge. More specifically, the tape printing device determines a variety of parameters including a number of lines and character sizes of the character series printed on the tape as well as lengths of left and right margins. When a tape of a relatively large width is set in the tape cartridge, the device increases a rotation torque of a platen for feeding the tape. When a tape of a relatively small width is set in the tape cartridge, on the contrary, the device drives only specific dot elements in a range of the tape width out of all dot elements arranged on a printing head. The characteristic element of the tape cartridge stores the specific information expressed as depths of a plurality of holes or electric data. This specific information may be updated to identify a user or detect a residual amount of the tape.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for making a linear cut across stationary media in a printer, particularly applicable to rollfeed media.. A self-contained cutter assembly is activated by a printer carriage to move across a media path through a cutting zone and includes a first wheel-driven rotary cutter which acts cooperatively with a second passive rotary cutter to cut through the media. The first rotary cutter is driven by a concentrically mounted drive tire having a diameter less than the diameter of the first rotary cutter, and is generally positioned under the media path. The second rotary cutter rotates freely, and is generally positioned above the media path. A media guide member on the printer has an output flange with a lower surface for engagement with the drive tire and an upper surface to provide underlying support for the media adjacent the cutting zone. A downwardly biased second tire on the cutter assembly is vertically adjustable to hold media of various thicknesses against the media guide member during a cutting operation. The self-contained cutter assembly is located at a lower end of a rigid arm bracket which slides back and forth along a carnage slider rod.
