摘要: A resonant apparatus such as a resonant waveguide module in an RF particle accelerator includes an unbrazed joint that provides a reliable vacuum seal and RF contact between resonators with precisely controlled internal geometry. The joint can be disassembled and reassembled without degradation. Hard, stainless steel end faces include knife edges pressed into a copper central component, such as a gasket. The knife edges extend the waveguide interiors without gaps or interruptions. The central component serves as a coupling iris or other functional component of the resonant apparatus, thereby allowing the central component to have substantial dimensions that inhibit mechanical distortions thereof. The waveguides and knife edges can be copper plated. Embodiments include embedded passages and/or recesses used for cooling, radiation shielding, magnetic focusing coils, and/or electron optics element formed by permanent magnets.

摘要: Some embodiments include operation of an accelerator waveguide to accelerate particles to a first energy within the waveguide, wherein a prebuncher coupled to the waveguide outputs particle bunches having a first phase, change of a phase at which particle bunches will be output from the prebuncher from the first phase to a second phase, and operation of the accelerator waveguide to accelerate particles to a second energy within the waveguide, wherein the prebuncher outputs particle bunches having the second phase. Further aspects provide change of a resonant frequency of the prebuncher from a first frequency to a second frequency. According to still further aspects, the prebuncher includes a prebuncher cavity and change of the resonant frequency comprises change of a shape of the prebuncher cavity.

摘要: An electron beam accelerator utilizes a single microwave resonator holding a transverse-magnetic circularly polarized electromagnetic mode and a charged-particle beam immersed in an axial focusing magnetic field. The combined effect of the transverse-magnetic microwave fields and the axial magnetic field provide the electron beam with a helical shape and a rotational motion which allows the entire beam to be continually accelerated to high energies in a dc-like fashion. The use of the transverse-magnetic circularly polarized electromagnetic mode allows the resonant frequency to be independent of resonator length--allowing the resonator length to be selected to achieve desired particle acceleration. Using a transverse-magnetic rotating wave mode, TM.sub.110, allows the cavity frequency to be independent of cavity length and eliminates the need for bunched beams and short cavities while allowing the use of a spiraling moving beam. The rotating wave electron beam has a number of applications including, for example, a compact, pulsed high energy electron beam generator within tool casing.
