    Abstract: Image integrity in an archive can be verified using document characteristics. Embodiments of the invention provide a way to verify the integrity of a stored document image by determining document characteristics, which can also be embedded in the image file. Before allowing access to the image file by an application, the characteristics data from an image analysis can be compared to either or both of, characteristics information otherwise stored, or embedded characteristics data. The embedded data can optionally be encrypted. In example embodiments the data can include a result of an optical character recognition of contents of the document, a length of data describing the image, a percentage of a specified color of pixels in the image, or a checksum. Example embedding techniques can include those making use of a tagged image file format (TIFF) header, a steganographic watermark, or an image artifact.

    Abstract: A method of detecting tampering in a compressed digital image includes extracting one or more neighboring joint density features from a digital image under scrutiny and extracting one or more neighboring joint density features from an original digital image. The digital image under scrutiny and the original digital image are decompressed into a spatial domain. Tampering in the digital image under scrutiny is detected based on at least one difference in a neighboring joint density feature of the digital image under scrutiny and a neighboring joint density feature of the original image. In some embodiments, detecting tampering in the digital image under scrutiny includes detecting down-recompression of at least a portion of the digital image. In some embodiments, detecting tampering in the digital image includes detecting inpainting forgery in the same quantization.

    Abstract: In accordance with an embodiment, a method of authenticating images includes electronically receiving an anchor image and a query image, performing a feature point extraction of an anchor image, and performing a feature point extraction of a query image. The method also includes clustering feature points of the anchor image and feature points of the query image, where clustering includes determining matching feature points, determining outlier feature points, and excluding outlier feature points. Whether the anchor image is similar to the query image is determined based on a distance between the feature points of the anchor image and the feature points of the query image. If the anchor image is similar to the query image, possible tampered areas of the query image based on the outlier feature points are identified.
