Abstract: The present disclosure discloses a mud pressure wave signal modulation apparatus and method, which relate to the technical field of petroleum drilling engineering. The apparatus includes: a motor (5), a valve plate (3), a main control circuit (23), a motor drive control circuit, and a downhole communication circuit; the valve plate (3) is driven by the motor (5) to be rotated around an axial direction perpendicular to a flow direction of drilling fluid; the motor (5) and the valve plate (3) are disposed in a drilling fluid channel (2), and the drilling fluid channel (2), the motor (5), the valve plate (3), the main control circuit (23), the motor drive control circuit and the downhole communication circuit are disposed in a drill collar.

Abstract: A servo valve in a servo pulser used to restrict flow to a larger main valve includes external stops on a housing to define rotational starting/stopping points and sweep zones for a servo rotor having digits for contacting the stops. The digits extend longitudinally away from the servo valve seat and extend into the sweep zones. Interaction between the stops and the digits in the sweep zones limit rotation of the rotor to a swept arc between the stops. The servo pulser rotor oscillates between stopping points in alternating clockwise/counterclockwise sweeps. Each sweep in a given direction creates one full pulse: closed, open, and closed. The servo pulser carries out a feedback/decision loop between hydraulic pulses (and sweeps) that receives information on one or more previous pulses and calculates how fast or slow it should drive the servo rotor for the current pulse.

Abstract: A drill string device configured to operate at a down hole location in a well bore toward a location proximate the surface of an earthen formation includes one or more motors and/or a capacitor bank. The drill string device may be in fluidic communication with a drilling fluid. A first motor of the one or more motors may be operated as part of processing the drilling fluid. A first electrical energy may be provided to the first motor at least as the first motor is operating. A signal to stop the first motor may be received and/or the first motor may be stopped. A second electrical energy may be received from the first motor at least as the first motor is stopping. At least some of the second electrical energy may be directed to the capacitor bank.

Abstract: Downhole telemetry systems and related methods adaptively compensate for channel non-linearity effects. To compensate for channel non-linearity, the optimum signal generation parameters are determined that produce the desired modulated pressure variation at the surface. The signal generation parameters are optimized to minimize the discrepancy between the surface detected pressure signal and the intended signal. The mud propagation channel is first estimated in light of the known modulation scheme under an ideal linear-time-invariant channel assumption. The estimated channel is used to synthesize the modulated pressure signal undergoing the mud propagation given the initial signal generation parameters. The method then varies the synthesized signal generation parameters to search for the optimal signal generation parameters. The optimal signal generation parameters are then sent over downlink channel to the downhole pulser, which is ultimately used to generate the pulse waveform.

Abstract: A telemetry system includes a downhole device configured to generate modulated pressure pulses in drilling fluid within a drill string, first and second transducers configured provide first and second telemetry signals, respectively, responsive to pressure variations in the drilling fluid, and a telemetry computer coupled to the transducers. The telemetry computer includes a processor and a memory coupled to the processor. The memory contains instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the telemetry computer to be configured to transform the first and second telemetry signals to a time-frequency domain representation to provide first and second time-frequency telemetry signals, respectively; and apply an unmixing filter to the first and second time-frequency telemetry signals to provide an enhanced signal in the time-frequency domain. The enhanced signal has a source signal component separated from a noise component, and the first and second telemetry signals are mixed source-noise signals.
