Abstract: A road marker according to exemplary embodiments of the present invention has advantages that exterior impact transmitted from a tire may be absorbed by elastic force of a spring as a consequence of a transparent cover being completely inserted in an upper housing when a vehicle passes on a road marker. The road marker has further advantages in that a vehicle load may not be transmitted to a guide cover and thus breakage of the road marker may be prevented.

Abstract: A retractable, reflective pavement marker for delineating traffic lanes of roadways and a method of installing the same that provides improved protection from potentially damaging vehicle tires, snowplows, and environmental conditions. The marker incorporates a reflector assembly mounted to a piston that is depressible within a housing. A biasing means returns the reflector assembly to its normal position above the road surface. A compliant adhesive cooperates with an adhesive lock formed between the housing and the opening to ensure that the marker is reliably retained within the pavement. The adhesive and a chamfered opening prevent pavement spalling due to external forces. The housing includes a removable retainer through which the piston is reciprocally received. The retainer includes a plurality of coarsely pitched lead-in threads that cooperate with a threaded housing. Multiple lead-in threads provide sufficient thread engagement, while substantially decreasing the number of rotations to achieve full engagement.

Abstract: A raised pavement marker includes a rigid reflector assembly that supports two retroreflectors. The reflector assembly is resiliently mounted over a base by a resilient membrane, which is secured to the base at its outer edge. When a vehicle contacts the reflector housing, downward forces supplied by the vehicle to the reflector housing deform the membrane, which allows the reflector housing to move downwardly to pavement level. After the vehicle has passed, the resilience of the membrane restores the reflector assembly to its raised position. Methods for installing and removing the pavement marker are disclosed.

Abstract: A depressible pavement marker is provided and includes a base receptacle, a piston assembly with a reflector and a resilient, compressible, water impervious mass. The base receptacle is mounted in the pavement with a portion of the piston assembly protruding above the pavement so that the reflector can be seen. The piston assembly and base are of a piston-in-cylinder arrangement with the piston assembly depressible into the base. The mass fills substantially the entire cavity formed between the inner surfaces of the piston assembly and the base. In another embodiment a self illuminating marker is provided and includes a solar cell, rechargeable battery, light source and sensor. The solar cell recharged the battery during daylight hours. The sensor energized and de-energized the light source in response to external indications. A further embodiment is also provided which includes a locational traffic marker having a transmitter in the piston assembly for sending a locational signal to a remote receiver such as for example a suitable equipped emergency vehicle.

Abstract: A plastic retractable pavement marker/reflector having a base with a freely rotatable depressable cap projecting upwardly therefrom. A neoprene material or some other non-absorbent flexible material is used to fill the cavity inside the base, thereby keeping out debris and other substances to make sure the cap remains depressable. After being compressed by the depressable cap, the neoprene material expands back to its original size, thereby forcing the cap to return to its original position projecting upwardly from the base, again making the cap visible from all directions.

Abstract: A reflective road stud comprises a resilient shell having a recess in which a reflective device is mounted. In order that an block insert having an array of reflective elements may be used, a flange is formed integrally with the shell behind the recess, and the block insert is bonded to the flange. In order to provide for a self-wiping action, slots are formed between the shell and the sides of the flange, and a shearable connection is provided between the shell and the bottom of the flange. Upon shearing or cutting of the connection, a wiper lip is formed which wipes the reflective elements, upon depression of the shell by a vehicle tire. In an alternative embodiment the block insert is mounted on a flap behind the recess.

Abstract: A self-cleaning reflective road marker comprises a housing formed of a generally cylindrical portion insertable into the road and a flanged portion for lying on the road surface connected thereto. The housing contains a stud mounted on a rubber hemisphere. The stud contains a circular reflector and the housing contains a circular o-ring located in the flanged portion opposite the reflector. In response to the passing of a tire over the marker, the stud is depressed and the reflector is wiped clean by the o-ring. On removal of the tire force, the resilience of the rubber hemisphere forces the stud into its original position and the reflector is further cleaned by the o-ring.The stud consists of two parts connected together, from above by a threaded bolt such that when the marker is fixed in the road the part can be removed to enable removal or replacement of the reflector and the o-ring.
